I cannot find any news reports to support or deny the Edmonton Sun's article about a CWD deer cull, so here is what the Sun reported:

News of a deer cull to prevent the spreading of CWD has been reported from Alberta. This is to take place on the whitetail deer population in eastern Alberta, along the border of Saskatchewan. The Edmonton Sun is reporting that the Alberta government is organizing a massive deer cull in that region to keep chronic wasting disease out of the province's deer and elk.

The cull will be carried out by Alberta Fish and Wildlife officials armed with high-powered rifles. Plans call for completely eliminating the mule and whitetail deer of both sexes and all ages from a nearly 300-square-kilometer area east of Chauvin, a town in Alberta about 170 miles southeast of Edmonton. The area is WMU 234.

"It's intended to be a complete removal, wherever we can do that," Dave Ealey, a spokesman for the Sustainable Resource Development, told the Edmonton Sun earlier this week.

I haven't checked out the story, but it wouldn't surprise me. Saskatchewan had a CWD reduction hunt south-east of there last fall.

Alberta takes action to reduce disease risk in wild deer

The Alberta government will cull deer near the Alberta-Saskatchewan border, following evidence that chronic wasting disease (CWD) has become established in wild deer at nearby locations in Saskatchewan.
http://www3.gov.ab.ca/srd/fw/images/deer_head.jpgAt least 57 wild deer with CWD have been identified in Saskatchewan. The most recent case, part of a cluster of four wild deer with CWD, was found about 1.5 km from the Alberta border, east of Chauvin. Biologists with Alberta Sustainable Resource Development, Fish and Wildlife Division, believe strong preventative action is necessary to limit the spread of the disease to Alberta deer. No cases of CWD in the wild have been recorded in Alberta to date-through Alberta's extensive monitoring program, more than 5,400 wild deer and elk have been tested since 1996.
In March, Fish and Wildlife officers will begin culling deer within a well-defined high risk region east of Chauvin, comprising Townships 41, 42 and 43 in Range 1, W4. The cull area is about 29 km long (18 miles) by 10 km wide (6 miles). Public information meetings will take place in Lloydminster on March 7, Wainwright on March 8, Chauvin on March 9 and Provost on March 10. Alberta wants to develop a long-term approach to CWD in border areas. Input from area residents will be very helpful.
http://www3.gov.ab.ca/srd/fw/images/White_tail_deer.jpgFish and Wildlife officers will seek permission from landowners and agricultural producers to cull deer on their properties. The cull will be completed by early April. Alberta will test for the presence of CWD in all deer collected. Fish and Wildlife staff will continue to ensure public safety and will take steps to minimize disturbance to residents.

I don't think that this is going to work ! They don't know what is giving the Deer and Elk this desease in the first place ! It could be something in the ground in these areas like a virus or what ever and until they find out the source it will still spread by air, water , birds etc. ! JAGG
