My local gunshop has a quantity of 220 grain 44/40 hardcast cowboy style pills, but none of the same in 44 mag. And they appear to be too slack to bother ordering the 44 mags in for me - it all seems just too hard. My question is this - I believe the 44/40's mike at .427 and 44 mag mikes at .429. Are the .427's likley to work OK and give acceptable accuracy out of my Ruger 96/44, or are they likely to just rattle down the tube??
I'll be using them for plinking and maybe the occasional hog at close range. If they won't work I think I'll just order them direct from the manufacturer, and the local gun shop can have someone elses money ( if they can be bothered. ) :o

Most likely, will lead the barrel horribly.

Well you need to look at the lead first . What size is it?
Lead nowadays is sized a little differently . The newer 44/40 barrels have been opened up to take the 44 Mag .430bullets and the 44 Mag barrels too have been opened up sometimes to .432.

I use the 44 200 Rn lead bullet in my 44 Super black hawk and also in the model 29 S&W.
These bullets were sized to .429
Then came the 44 levers and I started to buy the .430 bullets.

I have a 1894 Marlin now this spring and it is happy with the .430 bullets as well as the 240 gr. sized to .430.

So best try to get the size . "the stuff" is and what bore your rifle is . You might just want to place your order with "Beartooth" and get the sizing you need in the first place.

Why not order a gang mold from fmreloading.com (most Lee won't need sizing, others brands also) and just start casting your own. Might be handy for you with such limited access.

He's in Oz, Harry - so I bet shipping bullets from Idaho will be expensive!!!! :D

i've emailed the manufacturer and he will cast me up some 44 mag pills in a 205 grn flat nose cowboy style . Not much demand for the bigger sizes here since our new gun laws.

"Opps" guess your right. I am a Canadain that has his lead shipped from the west and I am in the east.

Give us his phone book, ;) I am sure someone must have lead in the land of the Roo.

If I were Down Under, I'd order a Lee catalog, talk to fmreloading.com and make friends with the local tire shop. I doubt they recycle used wheel weights. Then I'd forget waiting on the whims of the local shop.

My 2 Vaqueros and my Marlin 44CB all slug .431.
My smallest 44, a 65 vintage Super Blackhawk, slugs .430.
