The only .444 I was aware that was ported was the 18 1/2" Outfitter(?). The .444 ss would be the Sporter model with a crossbolt safety hence the "SS" . Your question seems to ask is is worth getting one , and saying you enjoy the one you have so I'm a bit confused??

Ooooo, now I get it . Wasn't clear that it was the 444SS that you had. I have a 444P "outfitter" , they were ported , notice I said were. They (Marlin ) stoppped making the 18 1/2" 444's a few years ago ,so the "cost" of shooting one is gonna depend on what i't's gonna take to pry one out of someones hands. More than likely it will cost more than the clearance prices that you could find around the time of their discontinuance. As to noise , I don't know what to tell you , in the case of the .444 , there never was a non ported short barreled version , so saying its X amount louder than the 22" version ... cant really say how much is due to the length and how much credit goes to the porting . Its loud either way . Have talked to a couple of guys that shot the short versions of the .45/70 ,both ported and not, and to them their wasnt a dramatic difference that they could tell noise wise (?), so I guess you had to be there.I'll be the last one tell someone they don't need another gun , but if you already have a 444 SS I don't think your missing too much if you can't add a 444P to your stable.

Ok, I'm confused. I just bought a Marlin 444P brand new with an 18 1/2" barrel that is ported. Is this an Outfitter? By the way, I like the ports, recoil is managable but the noise will leave your ears ringing without ear protection.

Yes it is. I guess the.444 didn't earn enough merit badges to advance from "Outfitter " to "GUIDE" like the .45/70 and .450(?). If you found one new on the rack consider yourself blessed and enjoy!
