I'm planning on trying some 205 grain RNFP in my Ruger 96/44, having finally secured a supply of Aussie made Ten Ring bullets. I want to shoot hogs with them, and envisage being able to squeeze 2000fps or close to it. I've only ever tried JHP ammo on them to date. Can I expect a nice flat pointed hardcast pill to work OK. Most pigs I encounter are in the 40 to 80kg class, and normally running and pretty close.

Oh my yes

You'll be surprised at the wound channel you get from a non-expanding bullet. If the bullet nose is around a quarter inch or better (0.250"), at those velocities, it'll gonna time to get out the skinning knife.

I'd suggest trying to bust a shoulder, either going in or out.

Like MikeG said... dead pigs! I'm with Mikey on the shoulder shot in or out.

Cool! The ones I have ordered are a good 10mm across the nose. As I said most shots are on the run, so you tend to either hit them up the front end or straight up the bum as they run away. I will do some ballistics test on a commonly available test medium over here - the humble kangaroo.

.40 cal across the nose will do it, for sure!

A raking shot, if that's all you have, will scramble their insides pretty good too.... one of the first pigs I shot with a handgun took a 335gr. cast bullet in the right ham, out the left shoulder, and for all I know it's still going. Spun around and died on the spot!

Let us know how that works out for you.

just out of curiosity, why did you choose the light cast bullet.
I have had great luck on black bear and hogs with 300gr. they
don't move as fast, but they plow like a freight train. I was
wondering if it might be a little easier on the shoulder and still give great penetration. I'm eager to learn how it works for you. GOOD LUCK!

Speed mainly. I can get about 2000fps out of a 200 grainer. I figure with the speed and a flat nose, I'm going to hit them with a big shockwave, and still get heaps of penetration due to the hard lead alloy. Most hogs I encounter are in the 40 to 80 kg class, so you don't need to throw big slugs at them.

Fenring,
Beauty about non-expanding hard-cast lead is you don't need to push them fast to get performance. I use Ten-Ring's 420gr in a 45/70 on Sambar, very good projectiles!
Enjoy...

Thnaks for the info guys. My pills should be being cast as we speak. I'll let you know how they went after my trip on the 1st of May. Should have a few pics to post of some busted up porkers. :D

I got my 205 grain flat noses, and they have a nice 7mm flat point on 'em. I figure at over 1900 fps they should do the job.
