Fellow shooters.
The 2nd annual Midwest Big Bore Seminar, by John Linebaugh, will be held in Carthage Illinois on May 13th,14th and 15th. ( Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
Carthage is located in the western part of Illinois, approximately 20 miles from the Mississippi river, near the intersection of Illinois, Iowa and Missouri. It is at the junction of US Hwy 136 and IL Hwy 94.
If you are interested in the "Midwest" version of John Linebaugh's "Big Bore Seminar", feel free to contact me at anytime at the address below. I will send you the information via e-mail or by postal mail, whatever your preference. I will include an itinerary, lodging list and a restaurant list.
Last year was our first year and although a small attendance, we had a wonderful time. All who attended last year will be back again this year. This marked the beginning of a great friendship between the shooters that came. It is my hope and prayer that we will continue to grow and build new friendships in the years to come.
There were a good number cartridges and loads that were shot in the penetration tests. Of those, some of the more intriguing were John's 500 with a 450 grain Belt Mountain Solid, penetrating 48 inches in wet newsprint. Yes, this is a 5 1/2" handgun. For those of you who are 41 magnun fans, the Beartooth 285 grain at 1300 fps from a Ruger Blackhawk penetrates 31" of wet pewspaper. It is a great bullet for the 41, and holds together well. We had 458 Winchester with an N.E.I. 645 gn hardcast flatnose. The bullet came out of the moulds weighing 695 grains. Lubes and gas-checked weighing 705 grains and a moderate velocity of 1300 Fps would occasionally astound us with penetration around 66 inches. My personal favorite was the 338 Winchester with a 250 grain flat nose solid of copper alloy. At 2400 fps they penetrated 55 inches of wet paper, plus 3 inches of red fir, plus another 2 inches paper. With the inclusion of a beef forleg bone, the bullets went through 4 inches paper, the forleg bone, an additional 60 inches paper and 1 1/2 inches of red fir.
I'm sure that you will see things that will amaze you. As for myself, I seen many things in practice and application that I could only extrapolate from performance on game OR by what still remained as only a theroy in my mind. Combine that with John Linebaugh, who is among the obvious things, a skilled gunmaker, cartridge developer, phenomenal firearms historian, observant instructor, gifted storyteller, and a gentleman. I wasn't disappointed and I'm sure you won't be either.
The bonus this year is, we are blessed to have Lee Jurras coming as well. I can't wait to finally meet Lee. He has really "been there and done that" and has a wealth of expirences to which I will be listening intently.
