Hey fellas, I am not a big handgun guy, i have always been way more into rifles than handguns. I am now in the process of applying for a cc permit here in ohio, and looking for a snub nosed revolver with a barrel length of no more than 3 in. I have a lever rifle in 45 LC and hand load for it, so i am very familiar with this caliber. Now to my question, a while back i handled a taurus revolver in 45 colt that belonged to a friend of mine, 2 in barrel 5 shot stainless. Is this gun still made ? I have been looking in all the local gun shops and have not found any, I really liked the handling qualaties of this weapon. How good a weapon is this, as i never have owned anything by taurus before ?.....thanyou

They are around but so popular for concealed carry that they can be tough to find. Hit one of the bigger gun shows.
As I recall, you can get the smaller Taurus revolvers in .38, .357, .44 special, .41 Mag, and .45 Colt, maybe other chamberings...
Like the 7-shot .357, myself.

They are good guns and can be tough to find. A buddy bought one in Tauruses Titanium line in .45 Colt. We shot a bunch of factory stuff through it one day last fall and it was a lot of fun. Lots of flames from the porting and muzzle flash from that short barrel and that was disconcerting. The Ti is easily controlled in the .45Colt factory loads and didn't batter the heck out of my middle finger like the others in their Tracker line do in the magnums. In the ported snubbies Taurus makes I have noticed no muzzle climb on recoil. It all comes straight back. In the .41 Mag it comes straight back hard and fast! Even in the Stainless steel guns.

got it off taurususa.com. they still make these revolvers apparently if this is what you are talking about. It seems to be stainless with 2 inch barrel and 5 shot cylinder.

Got one, and love it. I've been a 45 Long Colt shooter for years and had always carried my 3-screw brass framed 4-5/8 Blackhawk during deer season, for finishing shots (and in hope of eventually shooting one with a handgun!). When I renewed my Maine CCW last year (after letting it lapse for the previous 10) I briefly tried to carry the Blackhawk, but found it too bulky and heavy.
A 38Spec. derringer was definitely easier to conceal during warm weather, but marginal powerwise and definitely short range. I debated, and then bought a 32 Mag Single Six, planning to cut it back to Sheriff (3-3/4") length and switch to a birdshead grip, which would've kept both weight and size reasonable while still providing near 38Spec level stopping power, with 6 shots though.
I was still determind to stay with a single action but decided that I didn't like changes in the the new model Rugers which made them quite different from the earlier 3-screws, and shelved the 32 project. Gun crank friends and shop owners had all preached that I should just buy a good semiauto, or at least a double action - I finally gave in and picked up a nice used 2-1/4" brrld .357 Ruger SP101. I was lucky enough to find one that had been slicked up and in bright SS - tough as nails, handles and shoots well, easy to keep clean, and has now become my preferred carry in either a Bianchi 7 Shadow worn vertical and crossdraw, or in a Biachi 6D IWB, also crossdraw. It's slim and compact (though if I ever replace it think I'd prefer a 3-16" brrl), and an adjustable rear sight would be nice too!
Getting back to Taurus 450s, I'd been eyeing a 450SS that a dealer had been lugging back and forth to gunshows, almost bought it twice (one time for around $350-!), but was afraid of Taurus service and kept chickening out - though it felt great in my hand, and weight and sizewise was very close to my SP101. I've deer hunted with 45-70 for 40 years, but had always thought a 45 Colt lever would be more than adequate up here in Maine, to the point of picking up a new 45 barrel for a Marlin 94 44 Mag I'd had for years.
Two sweetheart little used Rossi 20" barreled, bright SS 45 carbines showed up at the same recent gunshow, and I spent Sat. afternoon debating and went home without - drove back the 2 hours again on Sun. and bought the pre-safety one, currently torn down to bob it to 16", and 1/2 mag, will probably end up with firesights too. Prior to the Ruger SP and this Rossi I'd never owned a SS gun, but have now decided that for CC and drizzly, damp hunting, that thy're just the answer.
All of a sudden that Taurus looked even better to me, and I finally ended up trading my 32 Mag Ruger plus too much cash, immediately ordering the same 2 model Bianchi holsters as I carry my SP in. For light clothing/hot weather I'm even going to replace my blued 38Spec. derringer with a SS American Derringer in 45 Colt/ 410 3"! After a couple months of carrying I've found the Taurus to be a little heavier and bulkier than an SP101, the factory muzzle porting and those funky finned rubber grips do make it a comfortable shooter, though the soft rubber tends to hang up loose clothing worn over the butt.
There are some issues to address - my Ruger Blackhawk and the Rossi lever will both easily digest some pretty hot handloads. I can't really get a definitive answer, but have been led to believe that the Taurus 450 will not turn into hand grenade should I fire one of those hot Ruger/rifle level loads in it, but will quickly loosen up if fed fed a steady diet of same! For my use, since I have quite a few already, I'm planning to stay with Win cases for standard pressure levels, both in the factory 225gr Silvertip HP I use for CC and also w/cast bullet/plinking loads. For the real warm loads I'll use new Starline w/300gr jacketed - should be fun working up loads and determining how the low pressure stuff will print out of the Ruger & Rossi after sighting in with the higher pressure loads!
If concealed carry is secondary to hunting carry, and if you load pretty warm for your rifle and want to share ammo between it and your handgun - you might want to look for a 45 Blackhawk, or for something easier to conceal, a pre 2005 Vaquero Birdshead Sheriff's model.
Good luck and have fun, Joe
