Hi fellas ! As some of you may have noticed, i am in the market for a good ccw in 45 cal that wont put me in the poor house, I am considering the taurus 450, but also have been looking at a springfield armory 1911-A1 GI 45 acp champion, military specs. They have this at my local gun store for $400.00, trouble is, i dont know enough about them to know what kind of quality they are, and if this is a good price, my needs are simple, accurate at close range and totally reliable, would this gun fit the bill ??

crapaw,
In my opinion it would do just fine. Of course I may be biased, I have a Springfield 1911-A1 Mil-Spec .45ACP. I've had mine 3 or 4 years and never had a problem of any kind. I only shoot 230 gr ammo, but I've shot hollow points as well as ball, and it's never balked in any way. If my memory is working right, mine was a little over $400, barely used. I put a set of Hogue rubber(?) wrap around grips with finger grooves on mine, and wouldn't take them off for twice the price. Good luck with it.

They are excellent for the price. You won't be disappointed and you can customize them like any other 1911. That sounds like a good price, too. It would be hard to find one lower than that.

I myself am a Kimber shooter, but my good friend bought a Springfield (full size "loaded" pistol, entry level model) at the same time I bought one of my Kimbers. The one I bought at the time was a Kimber Custom II. The Kimber seemed to be a little tighter in construction and the finish was more durable than his bluing, but for the life of me I couldn't get it to shoot better than his Springfield that was $100.00 less (believe me I tried, it was a constant debate for us which was better). They both shot 1 1/2"-2" groups off a rest @ 25 yards. This was after some careful load development with premium cast semi-wadcutters and Winchester Super-Target.
Buy the 1911 unless you take care of your gun as well as your lawnmower, then buy a glock!!!

I agree with chase. My buddy and I bought 45's at the same time. Mine is a Springfield Ultra compact and his is a high end Kimber. They both are well built. I couldn't tell the difference from an operational standpoint. The Kimber is tighter and better finished but the Springfield is not bad. Actually he has had a functioning problem that was solved easily, I have not had any probs with mine.
It is easily the most carried and fired of my handguns.
