Just finished competiting in the Army's Small Arms Championships at Fort Benning, Ga. Course is sponsered by the Army Marksmanship Unit. There's three catagories Service Rifle, Service Pistol and Long Range Matches. Service Rifle was fired with either M16A2/3/4 or M4 (I was the only one who shot a M4) with ranges from 200-500 yds, iron sights only. Service Pistol was with etiher a M9 or M11. Long Range is still going on this week using M14/M24 or SR25. Ranges are from 600-1000 yds.

Battled the rain and sun and had a great time. Mark Westrom (president) from ArmaLite was there and donated several rifles. Thanks for the support, Mark and to other companies.

In the service rifle event over 150 soldiers competted agaisnt each other. Ammo used was Black Hills 77gr BTHP (I won 500 rds of this excellent ammo) Some of the courses of fire where:
75 yds standing to kneeling, rapid fire
200-100 advancing fire, standing to kneeling, rapid fire
200 yds standing, slow fire
200 yds sitting, rapid fire
300 yds prone unsupported, rapid fire
500 yds prone unsupported, slow fire

Good to see a post. Great pictures, not sure I would much enjoy a two mile run before shooting. How is your son doing?

SS,

My son came home Saturday. Hopefully we'll both have our leaves together 1st week of April. I'll be going back down range mid June again.

Did i see that the M14/M24 rifle were used in the long range
shooting, i was under the impression that these were no longer used but with Iraq have been brought out of storage for the SEALS and special ops.to use.
I myself have been working on a Springfield M1A for use at NRA Matches across the course(200/300/600)and if possible out to 1000 yrds, after adding a rear lug and piller it should shoot under 1/2 inch at 100 yrds

Perhaps CD can clarify, but I know for a fact that at least one of the Main Support Battalions in 42nd ID were issued M14s with scopes. I think that the Army is taking a page from the Marine Corps book and using designated marksmen. I am in an Aviation unit, so I am not certain. On another note, you can see that CD has the new Kevlar for those interestedin such things. They are lighter, have a different suspension system and chinstrap, and are improved ballistically. They are also smaller, so you can hear and see better. The Marine version is the same size as the old Kevlar, with improved
suspension, chinstrap and ballistic protection.

The M24 is the standard sniper weapon for the Army (M40 for the USMC) with the M21 (sniper version of the M14) still around with some units. The M14s that shooters where using there belong to the Army Marksmanship Unit there that if you didn't bring yours you could borrow one of theirs. The SR25/AR10 could also have been used since these are limited issue by units. Ammo used was the M118 LR round.

I did take a National Match M14 last rotation to Iraq and mounted a EOTech on a forward rail. Saw several other M14/M21s over there with other units but few and far between.
