Hi all,
I'm new to the lever gun and looking for some help. I finally got used to my 300 win mag kickin my butt so decided to try the 45-70. A buddie got in a cash crunch and I bought his 1895 GS before he got to shoot it. I'm planning a fall bear hunt in Qubec with my Mathews or the 45-70. If I could get some feedback on Loads and scopes it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all
They call me the breeze I keep blowin down the sleddin trail.

I really like the Leupold 2.5x IER scout scope for my stainless guide gun. Along with the ghost rings sights I don't think you could have a better gun for big game under 200 yards. I really like the 405gr Rem JSP for moose and smaller and 405gr kodiak bonded for anything bigger or meaner. Starline brass and H322 powder seem to be the best combination I have come across.

I agree with the bear. You have to try a scout scope setup to believe how fast it is.
I run the same set up on my mariln and love it! I have the Leupold Quick release rings so I can pop the scope off with my hands and use the iron sights
I use a Leupold 1-4x20 on my 1895G. Hunting load consists of the 350 gr. Hornady JFP, max charge of Reloder 7 in Starline brass. Usually makes nice three leaf clovers at the range.

Breeze,
I'll go along with the guys here..... after replacing a scope this past year, I've got Leupold scopes on all my rifles, mostly Vari-X III's in 1.5x5 variables.

[QUOTE=Mr Breeze] like the large eye relief.
I haven't been able to find "Gost Rings" Are you using Leupold rings in high, med , low?
I would like to still be able to use the Iron sights and quick detach.
