I need your help. I am going to reload for a Ruger #1 300 H&H Magnum. I just ordered some "New" Brass for it and I need to order some dies. I would like to order some Lee Collet 2-Die Neck Sizer Dies, but I am un-sure weather I can simply "Neck Size" New brass and then shoot it in my Ruger #1. Does the New brass need to be full length re-sized first, then fired in my Ruger #1, then "Neck Sized" for the next re-loading after it has been fired in my Ruger #1, or can I just "Neck Size" the new brass and load it that way for the first time?

Thanks

Usually can just neck size...new brass is fully formed (at least most of the time) and needs only to be neck sized to get the dings/dents out and to make the bullet pull uniform.

Once in awhile, will find some factory new cases that won't chamber...usually it's a rifle built with a minimum dimention chamber.

Sooner or later, are going to want a full length die...only so many neck sizes before the case tneds to get a little sticky...may as well spring for the full length die as all you'll need is the sizer die, the seater from teh neck size set will wrok just fine.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. I will just spring for them both now while I am ordering.

If you buy the delux set of dies it comes with a full length sizer and the collet neck size die. I also add the factory crimp die to my sets. Lee sells most of the popular calibre dies in the delux sets.

There shouldn't be too much of a need for the crimp die since the ammo will be used in a single shot. Unless of course you want to experiment with it.

Your right. I also shoot a Ruger #1 and don't crimp for it. In fact I don't crimp for any of the rifles I shoot (all bolt actions) I do crimp for the revolvers to keep the bullets from sliding forward.

I know there is a lot of controversy over crimping rifle cases. Some say they are more consistant if crimped.

I just bought a new Lee set of dies for the 308 and they now come with a factory crimp die. I thought I would try it over the chrono and see if there was any difference. I was also wondering if it did anything to the case life by working the brass in the crimp area.

Do you crimp your rifle loads and does it seem to make any difference?

Thanks
