I am going to fit a Marbles tang sight to a vintage Winchester 1892 in .32WCF. The original front sight is worn and damaged and needs to be replaced. According to the Brownells sight chart the 92 front sight is .312" high.

I am thinking of leaving the rear sight in place rather than remove it and use a slot blank. However I won't be using it because I can't see it - feeble eyesight - the reason I need a peep. This is a fairly subjective personal thing. I don't want an empty slot. I'm not sold on slot blanks and the tang/open sight combo looks good to me, even though I won't actually use it.

I am considering installing a taller front sight, in the order of .375" or .410" (available from Marbles) so that my line of sight won't be interrupted by the rear sight. This seems workable to me provided there is ample elevation in the tang sight to make up for the increased front sight height.

I will probably zero at 50. I don't plan to shoot beyond 100.

Your thoughts please?

tango4c,

Here is what I'm going to do with my Pre64 Win 94 when I get it drilled and tapped for a peep sight.

I'm going to take an original Winchester rear sight, cut off the blade part from the base and then recontour the portion of the base so it has the scalloped point on both ends. This will have a lot more class to it than the run of the mill dovetail slot blanks.

I know it's a little work, and I wouldn't do it to a vintage rear sight like the one on your 92, but it would solve the problem of an un-used rear sight getting in the way.

As for the worn front sight, I'd fit the tang sight to it, then see where it hits and calculate what height front sight you need.

Thanks Joe. I agree on the blank. Did the same with my legacy after trying a Williams with set screw - not at all elegant. As for the sight; I was trying to avoid having to get in two orders in from the Brownells USA. I can't source the sights here.

I have always heard you can use roll pins to increase height of a front sight. Just keep adding them or using bigger ones until you find what height sight you need or close to it and them purchase your new front sight.

Hope that made since.
