A while back I had posted regarding dismal results using Laser-Cast bullets & Unique powder; none of the loads were very accurate in either of my handguns, a Ruger SP-101 2 1/4" and S&W 686-3 6".

So using the same brass (PMC), I loaded some Alliant 2400, CCI 550 Magnum primers and the same 158gr RNFP cast bullets. I don't have a chrony so I can only go by my own subjective response, but WOW!! What a difference!! Loads were 13.8, 14.3, 14.8, and 15.3 grains of 2400, and while all shot very well, the 14.8gr was best. The only real problem with the heaviest loads were that they were starting to spit lead; my buddy could feel it occasionally standing next to me.

There were no lead shavings inside the forcing cones of either gun, and the 2400 is much cleaner burning than Unique. At 15 yards offhand, both guns were hitting inside 6", even the Ruger, short barrel and all! I shot an empty soda can with the 15.3gr, and the slug completely blew it apart. It looked like one that had been left full and then exploded. That was where I was also noticing bits of lead had hit the can, so I'll probably stay with 14.8gr with these loads.

All in all it was a beautiful 95 degree day in the desert with a lot of good shooting. Next to try are some Hornady 180gr XTP-HP, and I need to order some 185gr Beartooth bullets as well. Anyway, thanks for everyone's support; I just wanted to let you know my progress! :D

Good shooting. Hard to believe that the powder has made that difference but who can argue with success.

Yes, the Laser Cast bullets I bought over 5 years ago are hard and need to be shot at jkt velocities to do right. If yours are as hard as the ones I have, you need to kick them out of the barrel fast for accurate loads. All the magnum powders should work well but your guns will have to tell you which is best. Sounds like you've found a good load for yours, I get better results with mine with regular primers using the #2400 powder.
