View Full Version : New 405 Winchester 1895 barrel dia.??

In the very near future I’m planning to rebarrel one of my Browning 1895 30-40s to 405, and plan to duplicate the new Winchester 405 barrel profile. I’m planning to replace the buttplate with a nice KickEez pad and picked up another factory buttstock to cut and fit, but still need a forend to modify. At a NH gunshow this past weekend, a dealer/friend had 1 new Precision forend in stock that was a pretty good color and figure match, but was marked “for large barrel” (channel did look big!). I wouldn’t normally worry, but in 2 weeks I’ll see them again, and then they’re done with the gunshow circuit in New England – movin’ back to the Ozarks!

I don’t know anyone here in southern Maine with a new production Wincher 95 in 405 to check out, or I wouldn’t ask, but would somebody do me a favor and mike/measure the dia. of their new model (Miroku) Winchester 95 405, just forward of the receiver and also at forend tip? My Browning 30-40s measure 1.125” dia. at the receiver face, and a little over .750 at the forened tip. I’ve already purchased a Precision 86 Win rifle forend that has too large a barrel channel for my application – gonna use it, though it’ll be extra work refitting and glass bedding – don’t want to repeat the process on the 95!

I’ll probably spend the $50- on it anyway at the show in 2 weeks, but would feel better knowing.

Thanks, Joe (hobbyguymaine/oldwindbag)
