Is there a caliber out there that shoots a 1000 Grain load? I know that's HUGE. But is there a rifle that would shoot such a round?

16" Navy guns take 600 pounds of go juice to get a 2400 pound projectile moving along.... doubt this is what you wanted to hear but it's the best I got for now.
In a smokeless shoulder fired, probably the .50 BMG round would be the largest. In blackpowder, there are those folks shooting 2 & 4 bores using 500 + grain charges.

glock23, a 585 Nyati shoots a 1200 grain hard cast between 1022 and 1730 fps for up t0 7,977 foot pound energy.
Also the 700 nitro shoots a 1000 grainer up to 2547fps for a 14,560 foot pound energy. Grab some of that! and hang on.
Just an everyday base of useless information.

Dear god, that's a huge cartridge. I know that the .50 BMG can launch a 600 Grain round. What I find amazing is that the .50 BMG was designed for a crew served weapon and that the 585 Nyati is design for African hunting. Man, that's one big bullet.

In the movie Jurassic Park, the great Australian hunter went after Tyrannosaurus Rex with a 12ga. Look what happened to him. I think the Nyati was meant for that purpose.
But, then, what does spielberg know about guns? He's the one who erased all the guns out of the cops' hands in his movie when ET was re-released.

I have never, and probably will never, fire anything as heavy as the big African Hunting cartridges like the Nitro Express. They can be quite dangerous if you are not prepared. I saw a video once of fellows firing these big monsters without knowing what they were getting into: man, it was scary. These poor guys were spinning around from the recoil, taking a few of them right of their feet. An old time hunter told me once that the jarring can be so great it can detach a retnae. Thanks, but no thanks. 300 win mag is about as much as I like to shoot and still call it fun. --Mykal

Mykal, I am wondering if I am thinking of the same videos, a 577 T-rex, the rifle flew from the mans hands, and literally knocked him to the ground. Some think that was funny, basically it just made me mad, the medical problems that could have caused, torn or detached retinas, torn ligaments or tendons in the shoulder, whiplash, just to name a few. Some pranks just are not funny. I have never heard or seen a practical joke when a firearm is involved.
I shoot a 458 win mag, after 30 rounds I have had enough, then I switch to something light like a 300 ultra mag. I recently shot a Barrett .50 BMG, I was shooting at some vehicles at 300 yards, man what a pussycat that thing is. I would love to have one, but I am too limited on the available ranges to shoot them. Not to mention finances oh well.

Tom hello, I was invited to a machine gun shoot, there were several junk vehicles, appliances, silhouette pop ups, and orange clay pigeons. the cars and appliances were set out about 300 yards, clays at about 350, pop ups from about 100 yards out to about 300. shooting both the Barrett bolt action and aWW2 anti aircraft belt fed. along with a tremendous number of sub machine guns. Along with getting some politicians out there, and letting them know we are just everday folk with an interesting hobby.
Hope this helps Halfbreed

Seriously though, please don't call me sir though, I am just another everyday Joe tryin to have some fun.
And I think you give me too much credit with the technical expertise. firearms are pretty much my favorite subject.

Halfbreed, the .50 BMG is a lot of fun isn't it? A buddy has a Barrett M82. I keep after him to put a scope on it. It shoots very nicely with iron sights though. I just want to see what we can do with it at 300+ yards.

Once had both triggers go on a 10ga. double (loaded with 2oz. loads)...won't do that again. 1750gr. of lead (1/4 pound) departing at about the speed of sound does get your attention...esp. as I was only expecting one barrel.
In comparison, a .50BWG (with all taht weight and a nice brake) doesn't seem all that bad...at least you EXPECT it.

MMichaelAK, this particular 50 was a R&D rifle, it had a 10X scope on it, very impressive to say the least. I am not sure if it was privatly owned or if Barrett just loaned it out getting feedback from some experienced shooters at the machine gun shoot. I have shot 20 gauge H&R's with much more felt recoil than this 50 did.
Ribbonstone, I use to have a problem with a dbl bbl 12 where both bbls would go off at the same time, a friend did some stock work, and pinched the trigger springs, hence both bbls at the same time, I took it back to him, he messed up the firing pin springs, both firing pins stuck out all the time, and when you close the action, BOOM both bbls again, finally at 14 years old I whipped out the chisels and sandpaper and fixed it myself. and did a much cleaner job of it to boot. Not to mention learning a few things about length of pull at the sametime.

Worst boot to the face I ever got was with an 870 shooting 12 ga. 3" magnum 1 1/4 ounce slugs. Nothing I have shot bounced up like that on me before and I was pretty surprised. Sore too. The M82 just pushes you around at the bench pretty good but the brake makes for a magnificent muzzle blast. EVERYBODY will LOOK. :D
Dust swirling, small animals and children flying through the air, overweight guy's guts jiggling, all from the muzzle blast three benches away.;)
I'll stick with my 375H&H and 416Rigby. They're prettier and just as much fun.
