The other day I was up at my local range which is some what ,convently .Just up the hill on the property that I live on.(youve got to drive right past my house to get to it).The subject of Bullet casting.Came up & it seems I'm the only one who casts! Everybody else uses Premium Pre cast .This got my Some what tight wadded .Little brain working over time So to day I wandered up to the range & I was right a Untapped source of realy good quality lead mine for the taking to blend with Linotype.About 25lbs later That was in 1/2 without even realy getting into it .I spared a thought of thanks for those who don't cast :D

It's great to have an endless source of free lead. Back home in the early 80's i used to do alot of reloading with a couple of buddies. We'd set up a production line and each of us had designated stations in the assembly process. We loaded .38SP, .357 and 45ACP, then we'd go to the police pistol range and pay our $2.00 to get into the "pit" for as long as we wanted and swapping guns all the while. Whenever we took a break to re-set up targets we'd start digging out lead until we gathered what we thought would be enough to start all over again......THOSE were the days.

Once a year i scrounge the backstops of our "22 LR" range. Its an all steel plate range and in an hours worth of time, you can EASILY gather a couple hundred pounds worth...the ground is just littered with little flat lead splats. Melt em down with some tin and a little bit of antinomy and it makes some fantastic bullets!!

All the ranges around here have rules against mining the berms.

Myself, I believe I'm very lucky to belong to a traditional black powder club ie: patched round ball, pure lead. This does make the effort a little better, the real nice thing is after I screen out the lead and repack the berms I work on. I then clean up the range of debris and put it in our burning ring, I have an old dutch oven that I use for the lead over the open fire. Scoop out the lead with a large ladle and deposit into a cast iron muffin pan I got in a tag sale a few years back. It don't take long and it gives a satisfaction the range is cleaned of debris, the berms are repacked and the lead was reclaimed. Plus I do take my weapons with me and do a little shooting while the lead is melting down.
