I'm waiting on a 10" .480 Ruger barrel that I purchased used from a member on another forum. Has anyone had the chance to shoot a Encore pistol chambered for this round? I'm a little leary of this combo recoil-wise, as I have a 5" revolver in .480 and it really snorts with the full power 420gr loads, porting and all. I'm interested to see what it will do with the heavy cast bullets, as well as the light jacketed ones...275gr varmint loads anyone? :)

I have shot the 500 S&W Gong killer and the recoil isn't bad...shot it in both 12" pistol and 16.5" carbine encore...recoil was brisk, but managable....and **** accurate. And as my nickname for it implies...it killed a few gongs with me behind the trigger. :D

No 480, but I shoot a 15" Ecore 450 Marlin a lot. It has their "muzzle tamer" brake on it and is very easy to control. That is until you boost the 420 gr bullet to 1600 fps. Seriously, it is much nicer than the 454 Cassul barrel that was on there. I imagine it will be similar too a 420 gr 480.

Thanks for the feedback.

If the recoil isn't severe enough, in a 10" unported barrel, I can always have the chamber lengthened to .475 Linebaugh or .475 Maximum. I'm guessing the .480 will be enough, but it's good to have options. I wonder if my Hornady .480/.475 dies will load the .475 Maximum.

The barrel will be here tomorrow, so I guess I'll get to give it a go this weekend. I hope it's not too windy to use the Oehler,as I'm especially interested in what the box has to say.

The Hornady or RCBS will load the 475 Maximum ,I use RCBS to reload my 475 MAX.
I also have a TC Encore-480 Ruger,The chamber is so large I can shoot 475 Linebaugh in it also,NO Kidding.
Recoil is fairly hard with 480 R cast handloads,I cast my own bullets so usually I shoot cast bullets only.

Sean,
have you had a chance to shoot any of the .475 loads over a chrono? I'm interested to see the difference in velocity versus the .480 and .475. I haven't had a chance to chrono my revolver loads in the Encore yet as it's been too windy or too busy at the range to set up the chrono.

Between my SRH 480 and my TC Encore ,I gain anywhere from 30-170 fps  big difference I know but the gain is not consistant across the board.
The difference between the SRH 480 and 475 linebaugh is 150+ fps with all loads.

I just ordered a 475 linebaugh barrel for my encore from bullberry. I have 480 SRH 7.5 in. bbl. I really like the round just not real jazzed about the SRH , if it was a bisley hunter in 480 I'd love it. I will most likely let it go when I get the new barrel from bullberry as I will be able to shoot both rounds from it . It should prove to be a nice hand cannon.
