Hello I am new to this forum, and relatively new to lever actions. I was looking in a gun shop yesterday at a pre saftey Marlin 336 with gold trigger. The bore was thick with dust from years in a closet. The gun wore a bushnell banner in a mount that allowed the scope to flip to the right exposing the iron sights. There was a clip mechanism to hold the scope in place which snapped over the top of what appeared to be a weaver type rail. I had never seen anything like it before. 2 questions, the shop allowed me to put a cleaning rod/patch thru the bore with RemOil and the patches came out green! I put several more thru the bore until I got a clear patch, the bore looked shiny with no pits. What was the green color??? Then has anyone seen a scope mount like the one described, I am thinking it will not work. Jimmyp

Jimmp,

The green color might have been copper and I believe the scope mount was made by Weaver. My guess is that it WILL work. If not, new Weaver rings are about $15. What did they want for the rifle?

They wanted $269.00 with scope, seemed a bit high, it had no external rust, some blueing worn here and there, dark stock, now bright bore. I may pick it up based on your comment.

Jimmp,

The last Marlin I've seen for sale here in hometown was marked $250....... a 30-30 with inexpensive 3x9 scope. When I see a .35 Rem, they usually start at ~$300 and up without scope.

If the rifle has the ballard type rifling, grab it quick.
I bought a '54 RC a few years ago and have alwaysbeen very pleased with the rifle .

I had a friend who used those on a 30-06 years ago with a fixed 4X Weaver scope. The mounts held their zero as well as the gun & shooter could. As for the rifle, sounds like a decent buy.

I paid $250 for a 336 ('72 vintage) in 35 Rem. 5 or 6 years ago at a Gander Mountain store in Appleton, WI. The bluing on the barrel was not in good shape, no scope. I have been pleased with it.

That sounds like a Weaver 163A mount, although mine flips the scope to the left. The screws that hold the rings to the base are coned on the ends, and should be fairly tight, or the scope can wiggle. Just loose enough to flip the scope, no looser, and you'll bring home the venison.

This won't be a ballard barrel but the MicroGroove. Marlin stopped putting ballard barrels on the 336 series in 1955, introducing the MicroGroove barrel in 1956. The Gold trigger appeared in 1960. I've got both barrels but I got to tell you... for as few as I see in this neck of the woods that gun would have gone home with me.

If it is still there tomorrow I am going to see if I can trade him a newer model 1894 with the crossbolt in 44 magnum for it. I don't know why but I think I would get more use out of the 35 Remington as a deer hunting gun. Jimmyp
