Questions that try a shooter's soul......
What looks better on a 1911, l-r:
Brazillian Cherrywood, finished in Tru-Oil (needs a couple more coats),
Teak, finished in boiled linseed oil,
Mahogany, finished in Tung oil,
Mesquite, finished in Tru-Oil,
or Maple, with a high-gloss epoxy finish?

And WHO will win these grips? The only certain answer: Those who don't turn in a target in the Postal match won't win them, that's for sure!!!
:D
(kimber not included :p )

Really nice. I like the teak & the high gloss maple best. I couldn't even make decent toothpicks from fancy wood.

Tell you what Mike, the mesquite grips you made for my 1991A1 Commander are something that I will treasure my entire life. Wood right off the ranch!

Yup, the mesquite in the set in the picture also came from that same log. I've got a heck of a supply of that stuff, may never get it all used up!
Thanks to those who have donated wood.... Luisyamaha, m141a, Ranch Dog, and RDKNG.

I think a 1911 for each set of grips would solve my delema :D
Boy, any one of them would be a pleasure, but the mesquite would be my favorite....kinda has character.

Since my Kimber is stainless, I think the dark teak would look best!

See, and the best part is, if you don't have a 1911.... you tell your wife, "honey, remember that time you found a great deal on a purse (or shoes, whatever), but didn't have anything to wear with it....."
:D
She'll practically write the check for you!

MikeG,
I have a walnut 2 x 4, about 15-18" long. My son-in-law had a log sawn into all sizes about 20 years ago & he gave this board to me. I've had it long enough trying to figure how I could make something without destroying it. There is a bit of sapwood (white) along one edge but otherwise it's all darker colored. Want it?
PM me your address & I'll get it out to you in the mail.

Those mesquite grips look sweet on my old Remington-Rand 1911A1 too. Sorry, I don't have one of those newflangled digital cameras.
Bye

MikeG,
Did the walnut board get there or has the USPS done a number on it? The suspense is killing me.

Mike,
Thaks for the grips! You really do a great job with them! They look great on the gun. As soon as I figure out how to work the digital camera I got my wife for mothers day, I'll post some pics.My vote , braz.cherry/tongue oil.

Mike,
Can you PM your address to me? I should have some Osage Orange tomorrow and might even have some Mulberry. I have some real nice cedar, how would that work for grips??
MikeG

I'll do that.... no idea on the cedar, will just have to try!

cedar will work, the problem is that it is a soft wood. It would have to be epoxied of sumthin.
