Like the man said - I like BreakFree CLP. That said, however, if I'm going to be out in a lot of wet weather (get quite a bit of that in Mississippi and Louisiana) nothing works as well as a good coat of paste wax. It's cheap, you can apply it readily yourself and it does an excellent job to prevent moisture induced rust if you're hunting in the rain. My experience FWIW.

Never thought of using paste wax... good idea. As far as rust preventative oil I think Birchwood Casey's Sheath (http://www.birchwoodcasey.com/sport/index.html) is the best. I think ribbonstone did a test of some products on a piece of metal left outdoors but durn if I could find it in the forums. He lives in New Orleans so it would be a good test of the different brands.

My vote goes to Breakfree CLP for all purpose cleaner/lube/protector. But if your just looking for rust prevention, might try their Breakfree LP which is just for lubrication and rust protection.

Although I prefer FP-10 for most lubricating requirements (I haven't tried it long enough to say how effectively it prevents rust, although I'm certain it is quite effective), I would have to say that WD-40 is probably one of the best rust preventatives. A friend ran a test of several oils, greases, and WD-40 by coating steel nails with each substance and leaving them in water over an extended period of time. The WD-40 out performed everything he tried.

Red Pepper: I am not trying to start an argument and what you prefer to use as a rust preventative/lubricant is certainly your choice of products. I don't use Rem Oil for rust prevention, I use Breakfree CLP. The Rem Oil is used for lubrication of parts at times. I actually use CLP for most work most of the time.
As I recall even the manufacturer of WD-40 does not list guns as one of their recommended uses. WD-40 is a pretty good rust remover too.. but.. that is what the bluing on many older guns are,, a form of rust that is blue.
I have personally had 2 guns start to rust using WD-40 years ago. That is why I stopped using it on my guns and also because there are products out there designed exclusively for gun care. Of course some are better than others. When the carrier for the WD-40 eveporates all that is left is a silicone product that I don't beleive will hold up too well. Silicone is great for some things I just don't think rust prevention on a gun is one of them.
Again, use whatever product you wish, I don't get a vote on your choice of products.
This thread may turn into a "poll" of sorts, if it does, I will be willing to bet that most gunowners will not lost WD-40 as the best overall product.

I use the Sheath on the outside metal and Breakfree for the bore.

I live in a wet climate and I've tried a lot of products. Shooter's Choice FP10 is the best rust preventative I've used. Supposedly Eezox is a little better - but I've not used it. Breakfree CLP, is an excellent Cleaner, great Lubricant, and an OK Preservation agent. FP10 is not a cleaner.
You do have to strip off other oils before applying FP10.
I have used RIG(Rust Inhibiting Grease) for 35 years and have never had a spot of rust on any of my firearms. I just wipe the metal with a small rag with the grease on it before I put them back in the safe.

Flitz is a good rust protector. Had a Makarov pistol when I lived in south FL. Put a coat of Flitz on it and carried it for a month in the summer. Didnt rust. I keep hearing bad things about WD-40 but that hasnt been my experience. WD-40 is a petro distillate and has no silicone. It will evaporate after a period of time and must be renewed to be effective. WD-40 will displace moisture instantly and will create a barrier that will not allow water thrugh. If you read the instructions you will see that if you put WD-40 over a coating of some other oil, it will drive the water(theres alway a little water in any oil) to the surface of the metal which will cause rust. I use WD-40 on guns when they get wet to remove the water. It will also prevent rust from corrosive ammo for a short period of time. I have used it on all my black powder guns and never had any rust. For long term storage, I use the Breakfree. The Breakfree also seems to make bluing look better.

I must agree, RIG is some impressive stuff. I wiped a pair of new commercial Colt Government models with it and stored them in my gun safe for over 20 years without a trace of rust. The Colts eventually became birthday presents for the kids' 21st birthdays! :p

Automatic transmission fluid. I guess it would have helped if I had spelled it correctly!
Maybe that's it in Spanish.... automatica fluida de transmissiona.... or something

you could also use differential axle grease, but i dont that you want to smell that bad.

My thoughts exactly. GL-5 and GL-6 transmission & differential oils not only smell, they permanently stain your duds.

I have tried most every thing mentioned here, but have come to rely on a product named Clenzoil for this task. It works extremely well for me.

I haven't tried a lot of different products, so I cannot say if one is better than another.
However, I do believe in Breakfree CLP. I have been using it for years on the metal on the outside of my guns, and I have been very pleased with its performance. There have been several cases when I was hunting all day in the rain, and in one case I didn't have time to wipe off the expensive double barrel shotgun, and I have never experienced rust. I use a thin coat, and I believe the regular application helps when it gets wet out.
I've tried several of the one's mentioned, will never let WD-40 near my guns ever again, and have settled on AMSOIL's MP (metal protectant) spray, a synthetic product. Although not made to be a bore cleaner, it does a very good job on powder residue, including black powder.

I don't ever use WD-40 either. WD-40 is a moisture displacing compound and not really effective for lubricating. I use Rem Oil for protection and MILITEC for lubrication of moving parts. I used CLP for years (got it for free while in the military), and never had any problems with it but I've just moved on to what I think is better stuff.

RIG.
Simply, RIG.
Done everything I've ever asked of it since I started shooting decades ago. Rimfires, centerfires, muzzleloaders. All protected. See no reason to change now.
"RIG"? What am I missing?
