View Full Version : Eye Surgery
I have been wearing glasses for 30 years and a few years ago had to go to trifocals. Got where I was seeing 3 images of everything I looked at and went to the Optometrist to see what was wrong and he said I had Cataracts. Had the worst eye done 2 weeks ago ant the other yesterday. I went this morning and the Optometrist checked my eyes and I have 20-20 vision in both eyes without glasses. Been setting around reloading today, but can hardly wait until this weekend to get out to the range and shoot some. Can't blame my bad shooting on my eyes now. It is remarkable how far we have come in some medical fields in the last 20 years. Wish they could come up with a cure for Diabetes. I don't have it but had a Son-in-law that died from the side effects of it.

What was your correction prior to the surgery?

Didnt find out. Got to where couldn't read because of image shadows. When I looked at the sights on my P97, instead of 3 dots, I saw 9. Had to wear my glassss all the time because I couldn't see well enough to do outside work without them. I am now having to wear colored glasses, even inside, to keep some of the light out of them until they heal, but I can see excellently. Told me I might have to use reading glasses, but I can see fine now.

If you had the last eye done 2 days ago, isn't it a bit soon to go shooting? Maybe you should check with your ofthalmic surgeon about this. (I'm thinking about the healing time, thats all)

You're right. When I had my first eye done I had to go back in a week for him to check it. He told me I could start driving a Car. Guess he saw the look on my face and he said you have already been driving. I told him I started the next day. I did the same thing this time. The main thing is not to bend over or lift something to soon or it can pop out the lense that they insert. After a week I don't think there is much danger then.

P97, I am with Thomast you should ask the doc. I had my eyes done a few years ago, 20/20 now it is somthing what they can do. They had me take a couple of weeks before shooting any thing big. 22 was ok but they were concerned about concussion from some one near shooting a large bore or high power. You dont want to undo what you just got fixed.
I am happy for you good luck

Thanks for the advise. A smart person knows when to take advise and I'm not smart, but I think it is sound advise and I'm going to take it. It will give me a chance to get caught up on reloading. When you get 20/20 vision after having bad eyesight, you sure don't want to do anything to mess it up. Thanks again and shoot lots this weekend for me. :D

I had laser vision correction 3 years ago, over $2k. I am back to wearing the same glasses as when I had the procedure... oh well...

I still have very good vision, although my eyes have always been very sensitive to light. I usually wear gas welding glasses for sunglasses, they are still not dark enough.
My mother has diabetes, but she watches what she eats, exercises and really takes care of herself. She is doing good. On the other hand, her cousin has diabetes and eats whatever she wants, how much she wants, on and on. she had lazer surgery on both eyes about 5-6 months ago seems like. Her vision has failed again, nearly blind, at this rate will be completly blind in less than 6 months. She will not take care of herself. I guess that is what it all boils down to.
Seems I am slightly obsessed about detached retinas more than any other vision problem, but I don't think the .458 winnie is going to hurt me. Stout handloads, which I am thinking about backing off the velocity down near 1700-1800 fps though. a Gentry quiet muzzlebrake, and the weight of the CZ-550 Safari rifle. I think there will not be a retina issue like this? Any thoughts on this retina issue?

A .458 is about like a lightweight 12ga with slugs, my opinion. They both hurt! Yet are tolerable from a standing position, no problem. Shooting off a bench is no fun. My 870 with the Dixie slugs kicks pretty hard!
Yup, throttle them back a bit and they are fun to mess with. Plenty of recoil but not too terribly sharp. My .458 is 'only' a little over 9 pounds. I shot one 500gr. factory load, standing, and lived to tell about it. My somewhat limited experience with the Marlin .45-70s seems to suggest that they kick worse than my .458, if anything (with the 'heavy' .45-70 loads). They might not but they hurt worse, with the low pointy stocks that Marlin uses.
I don't know how much a muzzle brake will help with a .458. You aren't burning a lot of powder, in the grand scheme of things, and the gas pressure is pretty low by the time it gets to the muzzle (especially if you throttle the loads back some). I'm sure it would help, but not the drastic difference that you'll see with a .300 Weatherby or something like that.
Put a good, extra-thick recoil pad on it, stay away from teh 500gr. loads, and you'll probably be fine.

Mike hello, I normally shoot the 458 with A 465GN Saeco.
somewhere around 2250-2230 fps. I am thinking about IMR 3031. before I installed the Gentry brake, 20 rounds from a bench was all I wanted, after the brake 30 rounds is enough. I certainly understand about the brakes effectiveness with reduced loads. kind of comparing a 45-70 guide gun with other 45-70's. The 550 Safari has a good Pachmayer Decelerator on it. I am thinking about a mercury recoil tube as well. I think this would be about all I could do. I really enjoy shoting it.

You're tougher than I am, I'm gonna try 350gr. Hornadys next!

My granddad always said, sometimes you just have to hit a jasshonk between the eyes with a 2x4 to get it's attention. Well I have met a few 2x4's up close and personal.
I am thinking seriously about a 400gn RCBS, there is lots of load data out there for it. It is a fun rifle and cartridge, it is just not for everyone though. As far as tougher I dunno, maybe just harder headed. ;)
