ok, i bought the 4 die set, lee 44 rem mag & special...

i am loading 10gr of unique into my 44 rem mag brass for a 240gr cast bullet. half way thru, i notice i've been using the 44 special bullet seating die?? i ran a couple thru the 44 rem mag die and it did basically nothing, so... what is the difference?

A tenth of an inch in case length.

If you're getting a satisfactory crimp, it means the seating die is set too high and won't crimp down on the .44 spl. Other than that, no problem.

Lots of folks (myself included) will use the shorter seating die, such as .38spl/.357 Mag to seat and crimp for the shorter case, then use either the special shell holder made for such or use shims to crimp on the longer cases. One die does it all. :D

All my 44 mag work is done with the Lee 3 die set. The sizing die is marked, 44 dot 44M-C1. The seating die is marked 44 SPL-G0. The third die is the powder thru the top expander and I have stopped using it and use the Lyman M Die for cast bullets. I crimp in a seperate operation and I do use the Lee seating die for this. I like a heavy roll crimp on my 44 mag ammo. I have to keep the seating die clean to keep it from scraping the .432 Beartooth bullets when I seat and crimp them.

well, i am confused then, i can't seem to get a crimp at all using the 44m die, it leaves a slight ring dented in the top of my bullet.. my adjustment must be off, eh?

The dent in the top of the bullet is from the seater stem. Pull it out while you are adjusting for crimp.
