Well I posted before asking about a Winchester Safe. Well it turns out it wasn't what my fiancee and I were looking for, we decided to save up a bit longer and purchase a much much better safe, and we did, this past weekend. We ended up getting a Liberty Franklin series. After extensive research and contemplating, we decided this was the best for the $$ and we opted for the 35 cu ft model so we won't fill it up so quickly. The only problem with it so far is that it is rather bare on the inside, so if any of y'all have any remedies for this please feel free to help!!

Just thought I would post, we really like it and it sure is pretty (which is a plus with the near missus).

Build your own shelves. It's easy to do, and much more functional (and cheaper) than buying the kits.

Rig up some pegs on the inside of the door, great place to hang up handguns and save space.

I didn't like the spacing on their rifle racks; made my own a bit farther apart. Got tired of banging stuff together....

I figured I would have to build some shelves for it at some point, but as of right now I have plenty of room inside for all of our guns. And instead of pegs on the door I was going to experiment with velcro.

Go to your local Pep Boys and get some carpeting for a trunk (side doors etc.) along with the adhesive it is easy to install and looks nice to boot. This will save wear and tear on your firearms and valuables. I use this matierial for a covering on my DJ equiptment and it holds up great. Use it in place of felt for the gun rack grooves and butt stock slots. You can line your door with it and velcro sticks to it very secure, you'll only need the hook side as the carpeting is the same as the mat side of velcro.

When I said bare on the inside I meant not too many guns, it currently has shelves which are fine for right now and has carpeting throughout the whole interior.

i too had that same problem with space in the safe.
and after 22yrs it's time to add an addition because of the the crossbreeding of shotguns.
did you know that if you leave two 12 ga. singles in the same space they produce a 12ga. coach gun.
(at least thats what i tell my wife.)

I managed to put heavy duty pegboard (1/4") on my safe's door. Drilled it in six places, made some spacers out of small diameter PVC tubing (the kind joining you faucets to the t-valve coming off the wall) to separate it from the door and then thru bolted with 10-24 bolts. Then hung metal hooks from Home Depot, first covering the curved part with small diameter clear plastic tubing. Just one hook per handgun, hanging from the trigger guard. If you space the hooks just right you can get a whole bunch in there. Painted the pegboard yellow and outlined each gun with black magic marker.

My wife will swear that if you leave guns alone in the back of the safe that they will breed! That is why she tells me I need to shoot more. It will save her money in the long run.

man... my safe must not have that romantic touch... cuz that hasn't happened yet... do you play soft music in there? maybe a little mood lighting?

mine has mood lighting. I velcro-ed some of those push lights on the inside. We decided not to get a lighting kit or anything that required an A/C line because we would have to drill thru the firewall.

push lights(batteries included) -- 4 for $3
velcro -- 30ft for $5
ability to make a soft mood light for my guns to procreate -- priceless

Nope, it has to be dark. ( And no peeking! )

I have an older Liberty Franklin, befor carpet on the outside walls. I have trouble seeing inside and don't want to spend a bunch on the kit, so I have considered stringing perimeter lights like they use to mark walk ways and deck rails. I have Colmen magnetic battery powered tent lights now. Depending on your climate you might want to consider a Golden Rod de-humidifier, or get the throw away packets from Sportsmans Warehouse. Might have them at Wal-Mart as well. The exposed shelf brackets inside I covered with tape, and like someone said before, I have more damage and scratches from banging them together in the safe, and the earthquakes don't help. The velcro on the door is a good idea. friend of mine velcroed holsters to the door(nylon), and dropped the guns in.
The breeding got to be a problem so I took a bunch to the gun show and found them new homes. It really is a nice safe. I have a Franklin and a Lincoln.

I ordered a can of desiccant from midwayusa for $8 for up to 50 cu ft and will see how that works, supposedly just throw it in the over to recharge it when it gets saturated. But here in West TX we usually don't have to worry too much about humidity, though lately we've been getting an awful lot of rain.

I think I will try the nylon holsters on the door, they are cheap enough per gun, and they will be permanently fixed to the inside, I'll get real holsters if I am going to wear the guns myself.

We looked at the Lincoln, but decided against, the fabric on the inside is nicer than the Franklin and wouldn't allow for velcro, but that was not the deciding factor.

Niner,

One good old home remedy for your situation is just to fill er up with Marlins. :D

Be careful what kind of mood music you play. You play mass produced country western and you get Ubertis and Cimmarons. Play gangsta rap and you get hi points and maybe the rare glock. I know I know, I'm stereotyping big time. ;) But I tend to play all sorts of things including African music and Russian techno and the latest additions were a 416 Rigby and a Mak clone...

Oh yeah, talk nice to your safe too. :D

What must one play to cultivate the breeding grounds for a H&H magazine rifle?

probably the same as for a M70 just louder and longer

You got to take the safe to The Royal London Philharmonic. Figure 10-12 concerts will do the trick. Thinking I'll never get an actual John Rigby that way. I'll have to do it the old fashioned way and save all my pennies...

I am beginning to think Gun Safe makers think were are like some ladies about shoes..anythiny they make we will buy..I am getting frustrated while looking for my second safe..what burns me is I spend $800 to $1200 and they rate them for 16 to 20 guns but the way it is set up you cant get anywhere that many if they have scopes..my old safe holds I believe 16 rifles with scopes on all...the new ones have the gun slots in a horseshoe shape..a row down one side and one across the back and one up the other side...my old one I bought 20 odd years ago has slots that run from side to side and has four rows deep and four rows across and I can put a scope on all of them...I know I can build or have someone build a decent shelf but at the price they chage for a decent safe I shouldnt have to or even have to pay extra for custom shelves...does anyone else have this problem or am I the only one???...if they rate it to hold 20 rifles it should hold 20 rifles with scopes...if that is progress it stinks.....hahaha... do I sound bitter?...no just confused and dissappointed..just my thoughts on an expensive item...WW1

I tossed the shelves & brackets that came with mine.... got a sheet of quarter-inch plywood, and made my own rifle racks. Ended up with a lot more usable room, and gave each rifle about a quarter-inch or so more 'elbow room' so that they don't bang into each other.
