I've got two bottles of Hoppes--one Benchrest and one Powder Solvent--and both of 'em leak. It's driving me crazy....anywhere and any way I store the stuff I can smell it, and when I retrieve the plastic baggies that I put the bottles in they're always be-slimed with Hoppe's on the inside (which is usually eating its way outside.)

Any of you run across this problem, and if so, what's a solution? I tighten the things as tight as I can, and I didn't take out the little paper sealer thingy that's jammed up in the cap; I don't know what could be going wrong, but it's a small irritant causing a big irritation. >:^O

Plastic medicine bottles work. Always keep the bottle sitting upright on the bench.

I suspect that I'm about to be unkind.
Hoppes, my preference is Montana Extreme, don't smell like roses or any of the other female preferred scents. I used to tell my wife that if women truely wanted to put on some sort of scent that attracted men she would have two choices, fresh ground coffee or Hoppes #9.
If the minscule amount of aromatics that can escape from a closed bottle of Hoppes, is disturbing, buy the small bottles and when finished cleaning a firearm with that bottle, throw the bottle, patches, jag, rubber gloves, plastic suit in the trash. The next time you dirty a firearm you can purchase new items.
You may find there is a gun shop that you can drop the firearm off at on the way home from the range, for them to clean. They could return it to you in one of those plastic long term storage bags. No air from the outside can get in and no aromatics can get out.

How could someone complain about the smell of Hoppe's? BLASPHEMY!!! I'm tempted to leave the bottle open just so my gun cabinet will smell like it.

Seriously, just use up the stuff you got, and buy different stuff or bigger bottles.

First off, you've probably overtightened the bottles and damaged the caps. Those plastic bottles don't hold up like the old glass bottles did. Secondly, depending on the size of the bottle, why not store it in a canning jar with a screw lid? A pint or quart jar would work fine.

Only cleaning stuff I don't care to smell are the ones containing ammonia.

Hoppe's #9 is a room air refreshner to me! :D

Geemany, if I don't get my weekly dose of Hoppes #9 I go into withdrawel. I have old glass bottles and the new plastic, YUCK, bottles. So far they don't leak. I've used the same two small glass bottles for over 10 years. I just keep refilling them from the bigger bottles. They just keep the cleaning equipment box smelling fresh.

All right, all right, chuckle it up guys.

The smell has never bothered me and leakage hasn't either, since with my former glass bottle of Hoppe's it wasn't a problem. It's these darned plastic ones that are doin' it, and doin' it COPIOUSLY. I think I'll take someone's suggestion of using mason jars.

Speakin' of which, gotta get back to the Weatherby...it's had the subject of our discussion sitting in it since last night. :)

That sounds like a perfect solution.

As for the question of how to get the smell off your hands, liquid Dial soap and warm water work for me. I don't mind the smell of Hoppe's, but my wife does. A couple of squirts of the liquid Dial and a good lather rinsed in warm water removes the smell very quickly. Works for Sweets also, which really stinks.

Kcih's suggestion of the syringe is another great idea of the application of solvent to patches, especially in the bore guide.

My bottle of Hoppes is glass, so I guess its pretty old. I haven't used it much for a long time. Does this stuff deteriorate? Like get old and stop working or lose effectiveness? That little glass bottle has been half full as long as I can remember. Should I chuck it and buy a new one, and pour it in the leak proof glass bottle?

I use mostly Butch's Bore Shine. I get that in the 16 oz. glass bottle and pour 3-4 oz. onto a plastic hair dye squirt bottle for use on the bench. Just re-fill it from the large bottle. Never had leaks.

Hey Phil-in-a-box,

Have you ever seen that detective show "Monk" on the USA network? It's a really good show. You should check it out, you might like it. I know I do.

Give these people a try...have used their stuff in lab, and have a set of there dropper bottles...usually put EVERYTHING in one of these for real use. Oil, nitro solvent, BP solvent, etc. Just marks-a-lot them to indicate what's inside. MUCH better to dribble the solvent onto the patch than to contaminate the whole bottle by dipping into it.

BEsiudes, make great range travel bottles...and any solvent works best if you get on that barrel while it's still hot and let is soak on the ride home.

You can get a plastic bottle that's made to hold (and not be dissolved by) solvent from Sinclair's. They come with a flip up nozzle top and a regular screw cap, as I recall.
One advantage the plastic bottle has ovver the glass ones is the plastic ones bounce when ya drop 'em ( if i ever got that klutzy,:) I mean). The old glass Hoppe's bottle never bounced worth a D- - -

I use that Barnes CR10... I haven't had a problem with the bottles leaking... maybe switch brands? Cr10 is good stuff, but it doesn't work worth a darn on lead...
