Ok well looks like I'll have to deputise you for the organisational side of this thing. It'll need to be a centrefire match as I don't have any rimfires (shotgun does the job), and as I havent got any scoped guns it'll have to be open sights. I have a levergun in 44-40 and a 303 SMLE MkIII so what'll it be? levers or bolts and what distance? Sorry about the restrictions but I can only shoot what I have!

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply but work commitments have held me up (i've just had a run in with a camel & came off 2nd best ) Up at our local club we shot both lever & 303 .So I'm going to try & raise some intrest in a postal Match for either or lever & .303 ! :D

Ok The Camel incident ! Now I hope all & sudrey will learn from on shooters over confedence !!!!!!!!

As I hunt for a living I am required by my beloved wife to go & earn a living from time to time outside the peramiters that I have set myself ie I like Kangeroo shooting .It pays well I'm never really away from hoime for long peirods of time& When compared with larger spiecies of animal it it easy work! now due to droughts & quota reductions I have found myself semi retired as it were & I had a few health problems! Now My wife Decided that this was no good for us so I should go out Camel shooting again (I liken this to French kissing my motherinlaw!!!!)
Now I got out & was shooting like steam! The score was shooter 35 Camels 0!I then only it would seem "stuned # 36 who went down ok but !!!! .....I made the almost fatal mistake of approching the animal from the belly side not from his back.thus being clear of his legs .At the moment I was wrapping a chain around his rear legs he decided to do a lazeris & return from the "dead"! The end result being (A) several broken ribs &(B) the experiance of shooting a camel from the ground at a range of about 2' followed by a 100mile trip across country to get myself medical attention ,having to confess that I'd stuffed up big time through my own stupidity & having to ring the wife & explain I was out of the game & comming home !!!!!!

Ouch! Hope you mend quickly! I'm trying to organise our Military/Lever boys for a shoot off postal style maybe we could make it club vs club?

Thanks for the concern fellas! It's what is known as an occupational hazard :p Belive it or not but in over 35yrs of Pro shooting I've had quite a few close calls .Ranging from getting Horned by a Water Buff & being trapped under my vehicle on the SA/WA border on the nullabour plain to snake bites ,getting ripped by a Roo.(and my wifes faverite getting my hand caught in a Dingo trap)! Give me a month or so & I'll be back into the Game! But an inter club Postal shoot sounds like a beauty :D!Just bare with me for a couple of weeks until I'm moving around a bit freer & I'll get the ball moving!

Dave, you can't inform us of your pro-shooter status and not tell us the various rigs you use? :(
What are you using for roos.....a .223 or .22-250?
And what about those pesky camels? :D

And Kamate, what exactly do you have in mind for this postal shoot?
Open or telescopic sights, distance, target type, etc.?
Knowing my luck you'll insist on open sights and thrash the lot of us.

Ok for starters I just recently ,changed from using Ruger77's in 223 to the Weathrby Vanguards & have had a really good run with it so far ! I have used Bushnell scopes for some years now (I went through the Leupold ,zeiss,Kahlse stage ) I've got the .223 topped of with a Banner dusk /dawn 4-12 power (the Old eyes aint what they used to be ) I also on occastion still dig out my #3 25-303 for long range & windy nights (that wears a 3-9x )
Now strange as it may seem to some people I hae owned 243's ,270's 308's even a couple of 30-06's for camels ! But at the end of the day I have a #1 Enfield that was built in 1902 (I have owned this rifle since I was 15! it's on it's 9th barrel ) It would have to be my fav Camel cal /Rifle combo ! It dates back to my time as A buff shooter in the NT
I also use a 45-70 Marlin & have a Bruno 375 H&H !But as I say at the end of the day the Old .303 has the mag capacity& I have probarly shot more Game with that cal than any other !Over the years I've lost count of how many .303's I've owned including Martini actions!

I think your right about Kamate! The dark horse that he is I can see this will be a open sight affair ! slightly tipping the scales in his favor :) :) :) (A man after my own heart :D )

Well we could do a couple of different classes.

Military service rifles into 3 classes

Standard
Modified (peep sights)
Sniper (obviously scoped)

Leverguns

Standard
Modified
Scoped (who scopes a levergun here except Nick Harvey!?)

Distances? Well I can go out to 500m on my range but most are 300m tops so I propose a 200m Service rifle shoot on Service targets (black guy lying down on yellow background)

Leverguns centrefire targets at 50m? Or 100m?

Sorry I haven't got any scoped guns! All standard number 1 Mk III and a 44-40 oh and the Mossy 12 gauge

Very, very interesting.
My main rifle at the moment is a ShtLE 303/25, fairly similar to yours in function I'd imagine.
It cost me $50 and the scope(an old Bisley Deluxe 3-9x) was a gift.
In fact it cost me more for the mount, rings and drilling & tapping than for the the actual rifle.
I haven't played with the bedding or had the trigger replaced and tricked up but the kangaroos I culled for a friend earlier this year couldn't tell(and yes, I had tags).
I'm using 30gn of AR2206 behind the Sierra 90gn GameKing HPBT and I think it clocks about 2650fps, maybe more.
Which load do you use for your '25 beastie?

Although I'm not a member of the .303 club yet I have a set of RCBS dies for it and I hope to score a Martini Enfield next year sometime.

As far as Kamate goes, I wouldn't trust him as far as I can kick him in terms of being a friendly neighbourhood shooter. :p
And since he likes to handle his .303's as often as possible there aren't many times I consider it safe to try and kick him. :D
If you believe him about his exploits(and I do) he's a real favourite for this postal shoot, although I'd have to think you'd be in the running after your considerable experience as a pro shooter, Dave.

A 200 mtr service sounds good to me ! & the 50-ioomtr lever action sounds really good esp for these tired old eyes !
(as for Nick Harvey I wonder if we could get him sent to a detention centre & then deported somewhere ? Oh like the Moon or at least the Artic circle  )
My old 25-303 is as stock as they come apart from the scope & the old bush methord of bedding the fore end !

Now I know someone will ask about the bush methord of bedding a Enfield ! So here goes & this is fair dinkum!

You take a peice of car inner tube & cut it open (about 100mmx 100mm ) You loosen the fore end off so you can slide the rubber under the Barrel .Tighten it down (the barrel) with the rubber right at the begining of the fore end & shoot a 10 shot group .see if there is any improvement in the grouping. Then loosen & move the rubber back it's width towards the reciver & try again .you repeat this process until you find the spot that the rifle shoots the best groups & then just trim the rubber off either side flush with the top off the fore end ! Strange ,primitive I know but it works !
Years ago I found the most important Gunsmithing tools for a .303 were a Hacksaw & a triangular file ! The hack saw was used to Sportirize the stock & on having done this .With ex Mil Ammo the rifles used to tend to shoot about 6inches or 150mm high so you either fitted a peice of inner tube under the rear sight or if you were near anywhere civilized you put a drop of Braze on to the front sight & then gently shaped & filed it down until the rifle shot about where you wanted it to ! Now I know this is quite pointless these days but in the 60's we did'nt have the gear around that we can get these days & so .We learnt from the generation of shooter's that came before us ! I still cringe when I think of the damage that we did to some really nice rifles (Value wise )
I tend to find that 28-29 gns of 2206 with a 87gn pill (the cheapest at the time in bulk ) does the job in my 25-303. As for the .303 with 175-180gn I use 37gns of2206 & with the Old but tested 215gn Rn You can't beat 38 gns of 2206 (mind you I worked these loads up & their about 1gn of Max in the 303 !

I WISH!!! :(
I don't know about Kamate but you can breathe easy with me.
Last weekend I went bunny bashing with the 303/25 and it took me no less than 8 shots to finish off 2 of the little b@ggers.
Granted I was using a 75gn HP bullet with 35gn load of AR2206(I'm guessing 3100fps) that the rifle isn't zeroed to but I fired 6 unintentional warning shots around them before reverting to my normal load and disembowelling them both. :(
And my most shocking misses among those shots were when I was rested in the fork of a tree at a very comfortable height for me to stand.
Go figure?
So you are under no threat whatsoever from me. :( ;)

I only have a stock standard 303 I'm not into full bore comps just like to challenge myself on 500m targets! I'm into military comps and leverguns I can't help it if I shoot well with a 303! In all fairness I think of myself as a competent shooter I wont win benchrest competitions but I'll do ok when it comes to realistic situations like hunting! Good to hear from you again Kombi!

Kombie .Do'nt feel bad reguarding warning shots! Most Pro's never admit to missing ! I have always said if I miss more than 5 times in a night it ai'nt worth being out there .....Man I've come back to camp early on more nights than I'd like to remember !!!!!!!! Mind you it has always been cause I forgot some thing or I forgot to brush my hair ,or I remembered that I'd just washed the Cruiser & did'nt want to dirty it ,or.....

kombi1976

Dave, with the current drought, who'd want to dirty up their 4wd too quickly after they'd sold their soul for the water to wash it. ;)
As for hair brushing, the day when I had enough to brush is heading for a decade ago so I consider it a high treat..... :D
Fabio at 22....Yul Brunner at 32! :(
I think the real solution for those 75gn HP bullets that thwarted me so much is for me to buy a Martini Cadet in 25-20 and use them in that.
Come to think of it, I've also got some 75gn Flat Point Hollow Base bullets specifically designed for 25-20 levergun.
Mmmm, that can't just be a coincidence......
See, I really am getting addicted to loading.......I actually base my rifle purchase considerations on the unused bullets I have in the cupboard. :D

Mate this is a tried & true methord in Auz ! Of trying to lure the opposition into a false sence of security! ;) Trust Me no Golfer in his right mind could think up the excuses! that a Shooter can think off :D

Yep those **** 75gners! are a waste of time in the 25 -303 ! But I tell you what. There aint nothig nicer than a little 25-20 on a Martini action or even nicer what about a 256 ? Loading is not addictive !Its It's Errrmmm Ah ? Oh hang it ! It's addictive (But hey it justifies the purchase of new toys to the Bride ! Ie honey it will save me money in the end as I've already got the powder & primmers that suit it ;) )

Well, I think if all I used the 303/25 for was to snipe bunnies at long range they would probably make up an interesting load.
Try and use them for you're everyday load and forget it!
I also have about half a box of 87gn Sierra Varminter spitzers that turned out to be as useless as the proverbial on a bull for my '25.
They succeeded in stopping the roos but I always had to use another shot to finish 'em off.
Waste of time and ammo and I'm pretty sure they weren't as accurate.
Most success with those was a bunny at about 100yds....didn't know what'd hit it. :p
But it's a complete waste if 90% of your shooting needs something heavier and the 90gn Sierras are the duck's guts for that.
Gee....90% = 90gn......I think there's something in that. :D
BTW, the 256 Win Mag sounds good but it's a lot of fiddling in some ways.
I just know Kamate's going to wade in on this one.....he dreams of a .256 Martini. :p
I guess if you bought a 25-20 Martini you could have it re-chambered to .256 but would you have alter the extractor?
And if it'll punch out 75gn bullets at 2500fps you may as well use a 303/25 and punch 87gns out at around 2700fps.
I think the 25-20 appeals because it's a kinda wimpy cartridge that really shows it's style in the right situation.
I like the idea of taking out an old .25 cal instead of a .22 WMR or 17 HMR.
It's got that mystical quality called character. ;)
Same reason why it's fun to smile smugly when your old "slow-n-steady" 303/25 cleans up a roo comfortably that a .243 had to make lots more noise about.
It's actually a real pity that those old rimfire cartridges like the 25 Stevens(?) and the like died.
They weren't muscle bound but the game didn't know it. ;)

Smoeone metion a .256 Winny?! MMmm sweetness just can't do it now as I'll be heading off to the army in 3 weeks and I just bought a new XR250R so moneys tight oh well I can dream about it

I wondered when you were heading off to join the pongs. :p
Which sort of unit exactly are you joining?
In other words, will you get to use some cool military ordnance? :D
What I can't understand is why you bought a motorbike instead of another rifle?

Kamate
06-30-2005, 05:27 PM
Well my only set of wheels was a GSXR750 which was great but tyres are VERY pricey so I'm "saving" money by buying a NEW bike which will also serve nicely as a shooting bike. ;) I'm joining the RAEME (Royal Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers). I'm going in as a ECN146 Armament Fitter.

So! I'll be an army trained Gunsmith, NICE.

Actually my gunsmith is an ex armourer as well lol

So I'll be able to build my own .256!

Dave H
07-04-2005, 02:45 AM
If I were to build another 256 win it would be straight from a ..310 .You get the extractor .Reburnished at the same time as geting it rebarreled ! As for the 25-20 ! remember this cartrage has been refered to as the Hornet of the 30's ! It has always been a fav of mine !
I used to shop around & find a Martini that had been rechambered for 32-20 & just get it rebarreled to 25-20 as all the reburnishing had been done for me !
Also A budding Gunsmith in our midst!!! :D Most excelent we do'nt have enough smiths comming through the ranks ! Good on you ;) I just pray that you do'nt end up being like the crankey so& so's that we had in the service in the late 60's -70's ! I'm sure you'll have the time of your life :D
