Read the posts under "Russian Boars", but I am looking for something alittle closer to home. My home is in Central Missouri and I would like to find somewhere within 400 miles of me. I have looked at some of the ones here in Missouri, but I do not have $500 - $700 per hog to shell out. I am a "working class" man and can not afford that amount. Looking for "meat hogs" that I can put on the table, still be able to chew & tolerate the taste, and not put a strain on the wallet. I had some meat from a 550# boar a friend of mine harvested. Tasted real gamey and was very tough. My friend said to expect that in a large hog. He went to Texas and paid over $900 to harvest the boar above and a 35# piglet (that did not include the travel time and costs!).
Any help / suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Well.... when you look at that price for MO hogs, you have to factor in what gas is going to run to Texas. We've got a LOT of hogs... but gas ain't cheap and time is money, also.

I'd sugget keep looking in MO and find out if you can harvest some smaller ones. Under a hundred pounds, they are great. Would rather have 2 or 3 little porkers, than a monster, any day. Find some hunting operation that needs to 'thin the herd' (which frankly, with hogs, that would normally apply to ALL of them, some just don't realize it).

Also contact the Mo dept. of conservation... they want all feral hogs dead, and might be able to point you to some public land. It'll be tougher hunting, but the price is normally right.

Good luck.... $900 sounds a bit high to me even for a guided hunt down here.

check out www.cedarridgehunting.com It is in Fayette Missouri. His new prices have gone up, but they are pure russian boars. Most any place I can think of, your hunt is gonna run $500-$800 or more. Like MikeG said, gas is expensive, if you have to go far. My buddy and I are going to south Texas for a hog/javelina hunt next Feb. 4 nites, 3 days hunting, 3 meals a day, skin/quarter/cool, 1 javelina, and all the hogs we want to shoot for $900. Add to that gas and lodging round trip from Indiana to S. Texas, as well as food, probably about $300. We'll have about $1200 in the trip, and be gone about 7 days. Personally, I don't think that is too bad 'cause one of the references said we ought to get 3-5 hogs each on the trip.

Why don't you post some more information on that, you might drum up some business. I'd suggest putting a post together that describes everything, in either the 'trading post' section of the forum, or maybe 'my neck of the woods.' There's plenty of folks around here that would like to shoot a piggie or to, might even check it out myself!

D-Hunter, for hogs in Il your best bet is to call the DNR regional office on the southeastern part of the state. I was going to try it a few yrs. ago and nver got the chance to make it down there. What that office told me was to try to find somebody who knew somebody that had a problem with hogs! Lot of help huh? I called the Feds because of the Shawnee National forest and that was a waste of time. " ... there isn't a substantioal population of hogs in the Shwanee.." But the one game warden I spoke to on the phone, once he found out I was a hunter looking to extend my hunting season did try to give me some info on which counties would be the best bet. I wish I could remeber which one he told me. Good luck and let me know if you find out anything

Nuprofessor.......I hunt hogs in Missouri and will tell you up front, that hunting public ground is often a blow out (no hogs) however there are hogs in the Mark Twain Forest, you just have to spend a lot of your time and I mean a lot of time checking out the areas. Check MO. Conservation and ask for some help, they will give you helpful information.

Now $500 to $800 dollars is not out of line for a 2 night stay including meals and lodging on a hog hunt OK. However, I understand what you mean about affording a hunt. There are 2 places that have good hunts on tap but hunting pure bred Russian Boars is going to be costly as they must buy their hogs too.

visit the iowa dnr site, or call them and ask about any wild pigs in iowa. i think i read somewhere that some part in iowa has been having some problems w/ wild pigs,crop damage, etc. not all farmers will charge to get rid of certain game.
