A friend of mine just purchased a pre 64 model 70 that is chambered in 270 weatherby magnum. Not knowing enough about the weapon I am turning to you guy's being I may have a chance to purchase it. The S/N shows that it was born back in 1946, it has the black caps on the pistol grip and the forearm and extreamly nice checkering. Looking at the blue book I'm guessing it is the super grade model but I'thing it may have been re-barreled due to fact it's a 270 Wea./Mag. the weapon looks to be in 93% or better, any info or help would be good.

Pretty much has to be rebarreled...and while that may make a very useful gun of her, and it's still valuable, it wouldn't thrill a Winchester collector...but who cares, real collectors almost faint at the thought of taking one of their collection out into the field, so they may as well be collecting the boxes they came in.

Thank you sir for confirming that for me, I'm not a collector, but a deer hunter. I am of the opinion that all firearms were built for one purpose and that is to rupture caps and burn powder, not to sit in a safe and collect dust being useless. Anyone who has ever shot out the barrel of a gun has truely enjoyed that firearm. If I get the price right I may just add the old model 70 to my collection of fine deer rifles, again thank you.

Am of the same mind as you...let the collecots collect and the shooters shoot. Collectors just delay the process...sooner or later their guns will get back on the market again, and eventually will fall into the hands of a shooter.

Would make it an issure in pricing..the $ spent in remaking that 1940's rifle into a .270mag. disqualifies it from the blue-book un-modified price. Part of it's value is in the quaility if the work performed, part of it in it being a Winchester, and mos tof it is in it's value as a shooter.

That's a heck of a find... I'd get it if you could swing the deal. Forget the collector prices, though - it's basically a .270 WBY sporter, on an old Winchester action. Pay accordingly.

That 270 Weatherby Magnum is probably one of the best 270 chamberings. It's a shorter case much more resembling a 7mm Remington Mag than anything else. An excellent performer, though you might want to use premium bullets because of the higher velocitys generated by it.

It does sound like a super grade. As old as the stock is and in the calibre you are considering you might want to consider getting it piller and glass bedded. It makes the stocks last much longer.

Good luck on getting it

Do have the gun checked out by a COMPETANT gunsmith prior to buying it. Many, many of the older M70 converrsions were done pretty poorly. Back in the 50's and 60's many were converted to other calibers by basement "gunsmiths" with some pretty poor results.
IF the gun is all original other than a rebarrel or rechambering it can still be barreled with an old Winchester barrel. Or I have had a barrelmaker reproduce the same taper of the original barrel, have it blued and screw it in.
