Anyone know if there's such a thing as a really good, strong nipple wrench specifically for removing a frozen blackpowder nipple? I mean something made of steel as good as gunsteel so it won't break. I tried the usual kind from Dixie but one of the ears broke off and the exposed metal at the break made it look like it's made out of some kind of cast or base metal. Absolutely no good for a frozen nipple. Thanks in advance for any help.

#1 What type of muzzleloader
Inline, caplock?
The absolute best and strongest nipple wrench for really torquing is a combo wrench made by TC. I make all my own out of 3/8ths allen bolts. If there is no load in it and you are absolutely positive there is not. Get out the propane torch and heat up the nipple until you see something bubble out of the threads near the nipple then a standard nipple wrench or a 1/4 inch open end wrench will do. Most often when I put my caplock away the last thing I do is lube the nipple threads with some bore butter that practice has served me well, prior to bore butter I used never sieze thread compound. Cure for the problem is okay but to prevent it from happening again is a plus. Take care and have fun. Swany

For what it's worth, I had one come in that had NEVER been disassembled. Cut off a 3/8 drive extension and made a nipple wrench, then used a 3/8 impact driver to loosen the nipple. Sure is hard to teach folks to keep front loaders clean. Here endeth the lesson.

Plug the nipple flash hole with a tooth pick and pour some strait Ballistol down the bore and let it sit for a day or two then remove with a quality open end wrench. Depending on who made the nipple, the flats may be SAE or metric and the tighter the wrench fits, the less chance you have of rounding it off w/o breaking it free.

The four keys are: penetrating oil, heat, time, and vibration.
Get at it from both ends with penetrating oil...heat it (not enough to ruin the blue)..let it sit...hit it with oil again...and if needs be tap it gently with wood, plastic, or brass.
Agree about the quaility of some nipple wrenches...have snapped a few. I just got PO'e and made one from a large size allen key, just large enough to fit the recess...slotted it deep enough and wide enough to hold the nipple's cone but to engage the nipples flats.
Once you get it out, give serious consideration to not letting it freeze up again. The goop they sell to keep shotgun shoke tubes from freezing in place works well on nipple threads.
