Dear group,

Hello! I'm very honored to be on this forum. I've always loved firearms as they show Man's evolution in technology and culture.

Anywho, I have a quick question for you guys. What lever-action shotgun models do you know of in the market right now? For some reason the only I have ever found is the Marlin model, but I'm looking for one in the 12 gauge area.

Thanks alot guys. I very much appreciate it!

God bless,
Joshua Smith

HAve seeen articles where the Tri-Star (China) copy of the Winchester 1887 12ga. lever shotgun was being tested...but with the import relationship with China being what it is in the US, am not sure how those guns got here to be tested.

On a guess, at lest for a time, the parts were being shipped to an assembler not in China nad they were "making" the guns...but I've no current information on their availability.

SO...there at least were some copies of the Winchester 1887 (and here was an 1901 model with some changes) being offered...and there still may be and I'm just unaware of them.

Welcome to the forum!

Marstar Canada doesn't list the Norinco lever action shotguns, so I doubt if they're still in production. The only market for them is the non-USA Cowboy Action shooter, and that's a very small market.

Thanks alot guys!

The only one I am able to find is the Marlin model that uses 410 bore shells. I know *extremely* little on guns....so how does the 410 bore compare to a 12 gauge in terms of stopping power?

Thanks a lot guys!

Seriously thinking of a 410 for defense use?

Well..the shot is traveling about the same speed from a .410 as it is from a 12ga., but there is a lot less of it. Are some buck shot loads avaialbe for the .410 that carry about 1/2 to 1/3 the load of 12ga. buckshot...could do the trick for close range defense use.

But I believe the .410 lever guns are chambered for the shorter version of the .410, which limits factory loaded options...mostly going to find bird shot loads in that length.

Thank you vey much....so I guess I go back to my original question....are there any 12 Ga. lever-action shotguns available *or* would it be possible for a gunsmith to convert a pump-action (or any other shotgun) into a lever-action?

Thanks a lot guys!

To the best of my knowlege, No.

Am reasonably certain if you really wanted a 12ga. lever shotgun, it could be made....haven't a clue who would do this for you and it would cost a good deal (like the price of a bottom line Korean car).

Got to ask: Why lever?

Is it just a personal prefernce or is there something about a lever shotgun that you'd consider "better" the the other actiuon types? IS it just something to keep things in a time peroid you desire?

All of the above! :D I feel (personally, of course) that a lever-action is easier to reload in my hands. I've always loved lever-action rifles and such and I like firearms from an older era and such...there are exceptions to this (Like the Desert Eagle:D), but I generally try to stay in the old-western era!

Next question is, who are the reputable gunsmiths out there than can do the type of extensive work that I'm proposing?

Thanks alot guys! I very much appreciate it! :)

Yup, levers are great.

Nope, this ain't gonna work. You are barking up the wrong tree with this.... if you truely want a lever shotgun, then stick with the .410 from Marlin (and didn't Winchester do one recently, too?) ... OR .... spend the bucks to get an original 1887. They'll probably kick the snot out of you (weren't they 10 or 12 gauge?) but odds are, most people won't argue looking down the barrel, either!

I can just about guarantee you, an original 1887 will run less than a custom conversion. IF it works correctly.... and doesn't take a couple of years for someone to figure out how to do.

I wouldn't think much of a .410 for personal defense, but it sure would beat throwing rocks. At least with a lever gun you could sling some lead in a hurry, and top off the magazine as you go.

Good luck. Oh and by the way, much as I love lever guns.... I have a short-barreled Remington 870 which will do nicely for defense. For around $200 used.... and not much more new.... it is just extremely cheap compared to what I value my hide at.

You could try a used winchester 1887 or 1901, but I think the 1887 was only proofed for black powder. I believe the 10 Gauge model 1901 was proofed for nitrocellulose powders. I have seen them going for $900n and up in 90% condition. This might be your best bet. Greg

Been thinking about it...if I were to stirrup a lever to go around teh outside of the reciver...pump guns work by action bars sliding straight back and forth...seems possible to link that lever to the action bars to get that kind of motion....but besides being a royal pain to set up, would be so ugly it's likely to turn the gunsmith to stone if he looked directly at it, so would have to do the work looking at the thing's reflection in a mirror.

OF coruse, if you were to go to these lengths, it would only be a matter of time before you wanted a lever action pistol to go along with it.

Thanks alot guys for all of your replies and suggestions. Bottom line: If I intend to go for one either get the 1887 or go the custom route.

I have one more question, however........why are lever-action shotguns so rare and uncommon? Is there something I don't know that makes these types of firearms unwanted or undesirable?

Thanks again guys!

Try www.coyotecap.com. They have some listed for sale that they did a little tune up work on. I think they also have a few that they sell as factory. List price is around $500. Federal Arms supposedly imported some but they went out of business a couple weeks ago, but you might be able to track some down. Good luck, they are out there.
Joshua, found this with Google search, there are several sites that mention the guns you are looking for.
Go to Google.com and type in Lever action shotguns, good luck.........larry

Hello.

I forgot to post this, and I apologize.

Things took a bit of a turn for the worst and I wasn't able to inquire for a purchase due to financial difficulties.

Oh well... I'll get it eventually!

When I do, I'll be sure to inform you guys right away on the developments! :)

God bless,
Joshua Smith
