Does anyone know how to load slugs? I can't find anything at all in any of my reloading manuals.

Also, if you have any pointers on how to do it using brass shells I'd like to hear that too.

Thanks,
Robert

I load 12 gauge slugs with a LEE Load All using slugs that I cast from pure lead with the LEE mold. It's as easy as loading shot shells. Put the slug in a regular shotcup of the correct size and load just the same as you would with a shot load and use the normal star crimp. The LEE mold comes with directions and load data. LEE's website may be able to offer you more information.
Don't know about using brass shells, never tried it.

I've had great performance using the Lyman hollow-base slugs in both 20ga and 12ga. Loading using the data provided with the molds has given loads in both bores which will group into under three inches at 50 yards using smooth cylinder-bore barrels. As mentioned in regard to the Lee slugs, simply load as you would any other shotshell, using a folded star type crimp. I find 800X and Blue Dot work well for the slugs I load.

Hope this helps!

Get a copy of the Lyman shotshell manual, that's the most comprehensive source of slug data I've seen.

I am using a Hastings 12 ga rifled narrel.

I've "miked" the copper solid loads and found that they are .580. Why can't I use a commercial .577 500 gr rifle bullet with similar plastic wad cup, and work up the load? Has anyone tried that? I don't want to get into casting bullets.

Thanks
Larf

check out a post from Hiramabiff that I included some data on the Lyman 525, right from the book. I reviewed his data and found it to be exactly from the book.
