Thanks for all the good advice concerning the Model 94 Winchester. I am on the hunt for one now. I had rifles growing up, but I am just rediscovering them. My question is will the Modle 94 make a good target rifle for 100, 200, and 300 plus yards. I expect I will need a scope at a certain point, and wonder if there are any recommendations. This will be a new purchase for a Shooting Range where I have been shooting handguns. Thanks, Don

If you want extreme target type groups(stuff you can cover with a quarter at 100 yards)...well.....it is possible, but unlikely. Alot of these levers shoot better than bolt guns, but on average you are not going to get that kind of accuracy. There are always exceptions. Mine will shoot better than I can hold it. I get about 3" groups at 100 yards with a Williams peep...but some of that is probably my error. At 60-75 yards I get about 1.25" consistently, every once in a while a little better. The first shot of my Beartooth Cast loads will pop the center out of a clay bird just about every time at 100 to 110 yards. They are easy to see and easy to hit. I haven't gone much past that as I don't feel much need. Every levergun is different, just like bolt guns are different....never know what you are going to get. Odds are that you will do well, especially if you handload.

Don,

Forgot...I would recommend A PEEP site, depending on how bad or good your eyes are.

Don,

I used this load to win the Idaho State Cowboy Rifle Silhouette Championship this year. From a bench I get 3 inch groups at 200 yards with a Williams FP sight and the smallest apature I can find.

Mixed Brass, RCBS 180gr 30cal FP cast bullet, CCI Standard Large Rifle primers, 31 gr of IMR 4831 powder. The bullet weighs in at 190 gr from my mold with my alloy which is junk range lead with some wheel weights thrown in. I lube and size with RCBS Rifle Lube and use a Hornady gas check. Volicity is about 1750fps from my 20 inch carbine barrel.

This load is very low pressure so it is not hard on the gun but recoil is a bit stiff after you shoot about 40 to 50 rounds.

What diameter are you sizing those bullets?

Congrats on your championship too!
