i live here in n. ft worth, texas. in the southern HEB area. see alot of coyotes, just now walking my girlfriend out, one went running by her car through the neighbors yard and into the creek behind us.
my question is not weather i can shoot them, but weather they are a danger to the people here in my neighborhood. i understand small dogs and cats will dissapear, but everyone is pretty mindful of that and keep their little yappers inside. my sisters house cat does not even like the door to be open.
if i'm seeing alot of these, i'd say 2 or 3 a night, should i inform a local authority like a game warden? how would i go about finding my local game warden if i'm considered "in the city" ?

Look up fish and game in the phone book and give them a call. Usually a large city has it's own animal control unit, you might give them a try before calling fish and game.
Lots of the big cities are becoming home to coyotes. They seem to adapt really well and are pretty safe because of the regulations about the use of guns in city limits. I know that is becoming a real problem in LA California.
I live out in the country and I can tell you coyotes love house cats and small dogs. My friend next door has lost three cats and a poodle to them over the last six months.
They can survive on garbage scraps and rats and all the stray cats in suburbs makes living easy for them near and in city limits.
Ft Worth is a big city don't try any animal control yourself, could be a chance you might run into a rabid one. I wouldn't want to see you get into any trouble. Talk to the authoraties.

I agree with the advise to call animal control you don't need problems with the cops over shooting a coyote. We've had them over here in Carollton for sometime. I found part of a dead cat in my front yard 3 or 4 years ago. at least one goos effect, I haven't seen any stray cats for years because of the coyotes.

Hey Guys,
When I lived on the north side of Alburquerque, I was told not to let my Golden Retriever out after dark or the coyotes would get him. They'd sing about 10:00 in the evening and pack up for the hunt. The dog of choice was the Rottweiler. You'd go for a walk through the neighborhood, and the Rotts would be looking over the fences at you. They kept the coyotes out of your yard.

Shooting any animal within city limits is a good way to see the inside of the County Slam. Bad enough to lose your liberty but worst part is living with bad guys and creeps day and night.
Snares are effective if placed right. FUR FISH GAME Magazine has advertisers that offer videos for how-to-do-it. Snares are quiet and effective.
Hope this is helpful.

One problem you face with traps and snares within a city is other animals such as dogs and cats also get quietly and effectively cought. Unless you can live trap your gonna kill a lot of folks pets.

Call your animal control officer and volunteer to help. You can get a letter from them, the stipulation is you call on a nightly basis (when you plan to hunt) and all remains be turned over to them. That's how it works in NH! JP
PS If you go out with an officer you can carry almost any firearm you like.

Try a bow. I killed a coyote year before last with mine at 25 yards. He went about 50 yards into the swamp and piled up. He's now in a full body mount in my den. I may have to move him though, cause even mounted they have a "doggie" smell that you have to treat once in awhile, and the Mrs. complains about it. Lord help me if I ever mount a Wolf.

Be careful, in alot of states they concider a bow a firearm. Projectile velocity is the key. JP

You'll want to make sure he's dead first! :)

Oh he's dead alright, he just smells. To be quite honest, I don't think I've ever killed anything that smelled worse than this coyote, and that includes boar hogs. My buddy, the taxidermist who mounted him, darn near refused. He told me if I wasn't his friend he would have. When I brought it to his shop, we opened the cooler, and the stench was horrible. He gave me a funny look, then asked if I REALLY wanted him mounted. I must say that he did a wonderful job. I don't know if all coyotes smell this bad, or if I just got one with particularly poor hygiene, but I do know that every month or two, I have to hit him with a deodorant to eliminate the doggie smell.
