View Full Version : Winchester 30-30 question

I found a Winchester 30-30 angle eject. It does not have a cross bolt safety, but the top is factory drill and tapped for a scope. The action is smooth and the trigger pull is nice. The wood and blueing are 99%. I think I can get the rifle for $175 give or take $10.
I have had very little experience with Winchester rifles. How is accuracy out to 150 yards and how is recoil compared to a Marlin?
Please excuse me if this thread is in the wrong place. I just noticed Winchester has a forum three places below. Sorry, but I do not know how to move it.

$165-185 would be a really excellent price for the rifle as you describe it. The rifle will likely be more accurate at 150 yards than the shooter, so it's plenty accurate for hunting. Recoil will be comparable to the Marlin. Marlins are usualy a little heavier than Winchesters so the felt recoil may be marginally less, but only that.

If it really is in the shape you described......grab it !
150 yards shouldn't be a problem for 2 inch groups.
recoil is the same as the marlin, although generally
Marlins weight a bit more, your talking 10 - 11 lbs of
recoil, which is pretty light anyways. The Marlin, due to
it weighing perhaps 4-6 oz. more may have a slight less
recoil to it, but the difference isn't noticeable.
I have the same gun and paid about 190 if I recall, and I"m quite happy with it. I thought it was a heck of a deal. If you are not going to scope it, do yourself a favor and get some Williams or Lyman type aperture sights and a Lyman globe front sight with the inserts. Will make a huge difference. Unfortunately, its no pre 64 in the trigger department though, still not too bad if you work with it. I'd buy it-

9/10 of the 94 and 94AE's I have shot or seen shot are amazingly accurate, yet somewhat load finicky. They have the barrel manufacture down pat. The Winchester and Federal ammo just works beyond expectations for factory ammo. The tenth rifle, however, cannot hit the inside of a barn. In other words, no guarantees what the previous owner might have done to it.
If the 94 is a Ranger, the price is just a little less than average. If it has Walnut furniture, the price is very good.
