I have a semi auto 22 rifle and I am experiencing lots of misfires with all brands. Is this a common problem how many misfires are normal. I average 5 a box some times more. Also noticed that the slugs are loose and sometimes jams the gun when it cycles. Is there any brand that is reliable. Any suggestions are welcome Thanks

When you say all brands of ammuitio are we talking about bulk pack or individual box stuff?

Generaly, if a semi-auto has worked well and then begins to have feed or ignition problems it is simply due to a build up of wax and powder residue. After a time the "dirt" gets down into the bolt and causes problems. If you dont want to take it apart use a spray cleaner and flood the bolt and action. Compresed air will help blow out the oil and dirt.

Most semi-auto .22's have a problem with truncated cone bullets. You might try some round nose bullets. I stopped using the bulk pack .22's due to ignition and "dirt" problems. The Remington bulk ammunition seems especialy dirty to me. I sure like the Federal round noses ammuntion but the Winchester Wildcats shoot fine too.

I have a little Browning .22 Auto that will run along for several Months and then begin to give me fits. A good flooding of the action and I am back in buisness. My wife has a Ruger 10-22 that will run about a year between cleaning. When tha Ruger begins to give trouble it is dirty! This one required a complete teardown.

Thanks william for your reply. I will take your advice and throughly clean my gun and see if that improves on less misfires.

What kind of semi-auto 22 is it? As William Iorg said, it can be caused by a dirty action. A couple of other things could be the cause as well. It could be a weak firing pin spring, or if it has been dry fired (depending on the model) your firing pin could be damaged.

Try a good teardown and cleaning first, then check out the firing pin itself and the spring if your problems don't go away. A few misfires from one box could be blamed on a bad batch of shells, but with different brands, it seems to be a rifle problem.

I think the most reliable 22 LR is the CCI Blazer ammo. It is cheap to buy, the bullet is hard enough so it doesn't jam up the chambers, and the barrels stay clean in my handguns. The Remington 22s are the worst for reliability, in my opinion.

I agree 100%, CCI ammo is the cleanest, most reliable, and the most accurate. I use it in my target pistol, and .22 rifles. I also shoot a .22 mag. A-bolt, for target and varmints, fantastic accuracy with CCI's and no problems. JP

i had my first ftf with my 1022 custom today.... i took out the mag and hit it again it didn't go so i hit it a third time and still no go... it was the federal bulk ammo from wallys..... i spose some of the cases don't get primer in the rim?? i just took my pocket knife and picked the offender out of the chamber and the next round in the mag fired just fine........
