Has anyone used a 150gr bullet for deer out of a winchester 300 mag? I know lot of you like the 180gr, but is there a good bullet in the 150gr. for deer? What kind of luck have you had with the 150gr? Thanks

I wouldn't, maybe could get by with a Partition or X. Imagine anything else would just blow enormous holes in them... fine for prairie dogs or coyotes, but I tend to shoot the deer to eat.

When I was a young hunter I built a nice 308 Norma mag on a mauser action. I wanted that super flat 150 grain load. First deer I shot was a nice muly doe trotting up the hill from me in a group of six. Shot it in the back of the neck. When the scope came back down the group was still trotting up the hill. Thought I had missed.

My hunting partner stopped me from shooting again, said my deer was down.

The bullet had intered the back of it's head. There was nothing left but a pair of ears and it's neck. Went to the 180's after that.

The 150's will kill deer wonderfully, but they will also distroy a whole quarter of the meat without any problem at magnum velocities.

Got a friend whom uses 150's for deer and elk. He pushes his reloads to 3200-3300 fps. He has no problem putting them down, He hunts strictly for the horns and always gives away whats left of the meat. Usually he can manage to keep the hind quarters, the rest is so bloodshot it's not usuable.

Perhaps some of the new bonded core bullets would do better, but if you just have to have the speed out of a 300 magnum try the 165's.

Yep, stop at the 165's. Take a close look at the ballistics and you'll see why. The 165's fly almost as fast as the 150's, but hold lots more energy, and great trajectories.

The only reason to go 150's is to really cut your recoil. But then, you shouldn't be shooting a .300 mag in that case, or just throttle the 165's back to 2600+ fps and you've got a good .308!
