Is there any decent, inexpensive 223 ammo out there? What types of groups will they produce?

Thanks,
Dan

About the only way your going to get around the cost of loaded ammo is to reload. Usually enexpensive and accurate do not go togather. Most "cheap" ammo is blaster ammo or surplus that is not built for accuracy.

Get youself a Lee anniversery kit, powder, primers and dies and start making minute of angle ammo. If your serious about shooting it is the step that will put you into the next level of shooting.

If you don't have room for a bench and press get the Lee hand press kit and build or buy a small wood box to put your supplies and loader in. You would be surprised how little space this can take.

Yep there is. Mine. Costs about .13 per round once brass is owned, and easily get 1/2" groups, now trying for even better. Can't beat that.

You just can't get both quality and cheap. Ain't no such deal, unless you can find a reloader near you willing to do it for you. Have no idea what they'd charge, but it would be better than anything from a shop or online and good stuff.

Bite the bullet. Reload.

If you buy a AR-15 with a 1-7 or 1-8" twist barrel you can usually find some surplus SS109 that will shoot well in it. I think the last stuff I had was made in Greece. SS109 is a heavier and longer bullet than standard 55gr loadings, I believe it is also a AP round so don't use it on metal targets that you don't wish to destroy. I don't know for sure if it's AP, but the last bunch that I bought would blow through 1/2" mild steel plate like it wasn't there. Other than that I'd recommend Black Hills match ammo, the stuff is scary accurate in my HBAR, especially for a load that isn't tailored to the rifle.

Winchester is also selling their "white box" .223 with a 62gr bullet that should shoot pretty well in a fast twist barrel. I haven't tried it, but it would be a good place to start. The 64gr power-point is a great bullet in the AR for inexpensive practice ammo if you reload.

Ditto's on reloading but if you don't want to, the winchester usa 45gr JHP ammo will probably do nicely, I can get sub-moa groups fairly easily with it
