I had a Model 10 FP right after the Accu-Trigger was introduced and sold it to a member of the gun club I belong to. This rifle was in .308 and would should sub moa with several different loads, I never fine tuned the loading but some loads shot very well. I've heard good things about them in .223 and with the 1-9" twist rate it should shoot a wide variety of bullets well, but I don't know if you can push the light 40-45 gr bullets full speed with a 1-9" twist for optimal accuracy. I'm sure someone on here has one that can give that info. For shooting coyotes I would not buy a .308 as I've never seen a coyote that would reliably stop a .308 bullet.

The accu-trigger is true innovation.

The Savages seem to be very accurate out of the box and the accu-trigger is a nice system.

I've hunted coyotes now for a long time and went thru several calibres searching for the ultimate coyote rifle/cartridge combo.

I've had 222's, 223's, 220 swifts, 22-250's and now finally shoot a 243.

The faster .224 cartridges kill well at 400 yards. The 223 and 222 sometimes do not put down a yote at those distances.

The 243 is very consistant out to 400 yards plus and makes a good squirrel rifle with it's mild recoil. Another consideration is that bullets for varmits are designed with fragile jackets and self destruct upon contact with the ground and do not bounce like larger calibre bullets. Making it much safer for things behind where your shooting.

Another thing to consider is if your going to harvest pelts. The 17's, the new 204 Ruger, the 222 and 223 are kind to pelts. Anything bigger and your tearing them up and dropping the value a bunch. The problem with these "smaller" calibers is much past 250 yards you sometimes will lose a yote.

Another consideration is how you hunt. If you walk and call yotes your not going to want a bull barrel heavy rifle, get a sporter weight that is easy to carry. my son carries and shoots a heavy barrel Remington VLS. He is 6' and 285 pounds and could probably carry me all day and not notice. I on the other hand am somewhat crippled and being fat and old don't help so I carry a Ruger #1b at a little over 8 pounds. It's all the rifle I want to carry.

Most sporter weights are accurate enough to do coyotes at the distance your talking about. I use a light weight sit down or kneeling hight bipod which makes a bunch of difference hitting at longer ranges.

I do not harvest pelts and use nosler 58 grainers at 3950 fps from my 243. This load shoots very flat and is devistating at any range I can hit at.

As for the 308 they can be very accurate and do double duty for other big game, but recoil is a bummer in the squirrel fields where it's not uncommed to shoot over a hundred rounds a day.

I don't think you would be unhappy with a Savage.

I gave them a serious look, I would have one now if there hadn't been a custom 788 come into the gunshop. If I were you, I'd go for it, you won't find a better value.

One of the guys here shoots grasshoppers at 100 yards with one of these in .308...they are ugly but they sure do shoot...and the new trigger is wonderful

I bought the package with the Harris bipod, Choate stock, Leupold mil-dot scope and metal case. It's chambered for .308. Shooting off the shelf Federal Premium Gold Medal Match with 168 gr. Sierra Matchking BTHP I can cover every 10 shot string at 100 yds with a quarter. A dime if I'm shooting well and didn't drink too much coffee. I'm going to work up a load to shoot F-Class in 300 m. any-any competitions this fall. It's a great gun for the money.

I have owned many rifles and many different calibers to find that right one for me, and have spent alot of $$$ I didn't really have trying this. Well I now own 2 Savage Rifles that i have had for several years now before and after the accu trigger system and both are in 308 cal.
These rifles right out of the box was shooting a .5 moa at 100 yards off the bench, and for the money you can NOT by any means go wrong with these rifles with the accuracy and performance they have. They also are now being used in Law Enforcement which alot of you guys already know this.
I too hunt yotes and use these and does a fine job, sometimes the 308 can be a little over kill on them unless you are shooting enormous distances with it.
We target shoot with these also at ranges of 600-1000 yards with absolutely NO complaints what so ever. Using the 168 Sierra match grade Bt's does a wonder. I'm thinking about investing in 1 more of these in the 223 and that will probably be it for me, and only other rifle I will own anymore if any would be the Ruger, nothing against any of the others or anything like that, its just that the Savage fits me well and does the job GREAT..

Hey Krowe, you could'nt have made a better choice on your selection. My neighbor just a few weeks ago bought the same type setup and is tickled over more than he has ever been with anything he has owned, and believe me he has had some very very expensive rifles that still did not give him what he was looking for. And now all he ownes is Savage Rifles. Keep me updated on your diffferent loads and ammo you try what performs best for you on this? Thanks
