I serched this forum and found one brief thread that touched on this question, but I was hoping for a bit more detail.
Could anyone enlighten me on the differences between these two guns?
I'm considering buying a P229 for everyday carry in 9MM because my customized Belgian-made Hi-Power and my custom .45's are too dear to me for day to day use.
I was intrigued by Gun Test's review of the P229 and I went to one of my favorite stores to hold on and it seems a good fit for my small hands.
Also, are they shipping them with full capacity magazines now?
I checked Mec-Gar's website and while they had 13 round mags for the P228 there were none listed for the P229.

The P228 is chambered in 9mm luger with a double stack magazine containing 13 rounds. It has the heavy sheet steel slide that is bent to shape then machined similar to the slide on the P220 and P226s. Later, the P229 was introduced with a more conventional solid machined slide produced in the U.S. and initially chambered for 9mm luger and .40 S&W. The newest chambering is in .357 SIG which was introduced by SIG in the early '90s. Other than the choice of cartridges and the sheet steel or solid machined slides, both pistols are operationally and dimensionally similar in both receivers and slides. Most purchasers opt for the P229 if shooting a more powerful cartridge is a primary concern. By purchasing an additional barrel, P229 users can switch from .40 S&W to .357 SIG without changing magazines. The last time I looked, the P228 did not have that feature. Whether or not you receive a full 12 round magazine (formerly LEO only) with your SIG depends on your local gun laws. Some states ie. California has a state law limiting magazine capacity to 10 rounds enacted by the democratic majority in their state legislature. SIGs are accurate and durable handguns. I currently have five of these in my family, two P220s, two P226s and a P228 which is mama's pet.

Sig has a buyback/rebuild program going on with many Police departments. An FFL dealer can get you the info. The handguns come with warrenty, and are availible to the public. JP
