Has anyone gotten a 35 Marlin converted to a 356? Can you chamber reloads with hard cast pistol bullets after the conversion?

Check the preasure limits of your action against the preasure of the .356 Win.

The .356 is basicly a flat nose .358 Win. with a shorter throat length.

I have heard that the brass can be used for either cartridge but don't know it for sure.

Marlin at one time chambered the 336 for the .375 Win. so I would think it could be done.

Ir you load your own you may be able to attain the same performance by loading up the .35 Rem. check with Beartooth. They may have some suggestions.

I've always wanted a Marlin chambered in .348 Win. I can wish I guess. Good Luck.. Alan

I have a 336ER which is in 356 Win so yes the rifle can and has been built on the 336 frame. They do come up for sale from time to time. Now if you want to build something that is in the same area but is a really straight forward conversion do a 35-444, using the 444 with a 35 rem barrel. Ballistics are similar to a 356 or 358. I have been waiting to get my barrel back from the gun shop where it was being reblued to try this one.

I'm not sure about this as I always thought the difference was the 356 is basically a rimmed 358 for use in lever actions. I believe the 356 also has thicker case walls reducing the case capacity so 358 data cannot be used with it. The 356/358 use the same reloading dies.

The .356 Win does have slightly less case capacity than the 358 Win. As for it working on 336's, I rechambered a .30-30 Marlin to .307 Winchester and it worked fine.

Taylor,

You can shoot cast bullet in your 35 Marlin now.....if you match the bullet to the barrel and throat, you'll get good accuracy.

Every time the 35 Rem to 356 Win or 358 Win conversions come up as a topic, I cringe a bit. Sometimes there are huge arguements about it. Bottom line is that the 35 Rem and the 356/358 have very different operating pressures.

A few years ago, "Handloader" magazine did an article about a 35 Rem to 358 Win conversion. The author went to great lengths to say that this was a handload only proposition, because shooting factory pressure 358 (or 356) loads could cause your rifle to spontaneously disassemble.

Food for thought..........

From this site back in January 29th Ranchdog posted this regarding the Marlin in 356.

this is quoted

"I've been working with the 444 Marlin steadily for the last couple of years and have JUST started with my 356 Win Marlin 336ER. Basically, it seems that the 356 Win generates about 2360 FPS, the same velocity that my 444 Marlin achieves with a 265-grain bullet. Here is how my ballistic tables compare with the two cartridges. This is just an inital look as I have just started shooting the 356 this week. I use a 3" vital zone for my zero range calculations. With these cartridges I can't see using anything larger as they simply are going to run out of steam beyond 250 yards for big game hunting.
Code:

356 Win - 200 Grain Hornady
179 Yard Zero
YDS VEL FPE DROP
25 2252 2253 0.3
50 2147 2047 1.7
75 2044 1856 2.5
100 1945 1679 2.9
125 1848 1517 2.7
150 1755 1368 1.9
175 1665 1232 0.3
200 1579 1107 -2
225 1497 996 -5.2
250 1420 896 -9.4

Code:

444 Marlin 265-Grain Lee TLC
184 Yard Zero
YDS VEL FPE DROP
25 2266 3022 0.3
50 2174 2781 1.6
75 2084 2555 2.5
100 1996 2344 2.9
125 1910 2147 2.8
150 1827 1964 2.1
175 1746 1795 0.7
200 1668 1638 -1.4
225 1593 1493 -4.3
250 1521 1361 -8.1

"
End quote.

From this info it seems like if you want .356 performance just getting a 444 will give you that and there is no question as to quality or safety.

Just my 2 cents after researching this same topic for some time.

Eagleeye,
I do not intend to highjack this thread but I have a question about your Marlin 336ER in .356 Win. caliber. I don;t know if you have seen the thread that I posted regarding the rifling in the Marlin .356. Anyway , does your Marlin have 7 grooves or more. My Marlin .356 has "microgroove- Barrel" stamped on the barrel but it has only 7 grooves making it not a microgroove barrel. Can you count yours and post it here.
thanks,

I think I must not have been as clear as I thought I was with my post above.

I do not have a 336ER but I would love to have one some day.

The person who I quoted that actually has the 336ER is Ranchdog. He posts on this site as well as marlinowners forum. Try to give him an e-mail as I'm sure he will let you know.

I do know that you are not the only person that this mis-stamping has occurred. I have read of a similar experience a while back of someone else with exactly the same thing. Not sure which forum though?
