This probably dates back to the Civil War, but anyway.....An
army unit had halted and dug in for the night, and the colonel decided he would stroll around and inspect the perimeter. As he walked thru the dark, he heard a senty yell out, "HALT!" The colonel stopped, and could just make out the dark shape of the sentry up ahead, who again yelled, "HALT!" The colonel said, "Soldier, I've stopped. Why do you keep saying halt?" The sentry replied, "all I know is they told me to holler "HALT" three times, then shoot...HALT!"
