Here in Alabama we have so many seasons and options it's confusing.
The week prior to opening of firearms season is reserved for muzzel loading "primitive" firearms. This takes in anything that loads at the muzzel except revolvers and repeaters. We can mount any sight system we like except lazer and night vision.
I watch a guy trying to zero his new super-boomer at the range last week. He was very proud of the 150 grain loads he was using. Every shot the front legs of his chair jumped off the ground two or three inches. He couldn't understand why his groups were 12 to 14 inches across at 50 yards. His buddy with the old .50 cal. smoke pole was stacking each shot in 2 inches at 100 yards.
Archery season opens several weeks before that. We are aloud compound bows, traditional tackle, and now crossbows. (you should have heard the hard core archers howl about that)We even have a spear hunting catagory for the really hard core traditionalist.
So many of my hunting partners are Magnum crasy its a bit over the top. One fellow has four "magnum rifles" ranging from .416, .338, .300, and 7mm. His .300 RUM hs a 6-24x52 scope so he can shoot the long shots. He has never practiced at more than a hundred yards in his life but believes he can hit anything out to 450. The nearest range with over a 100 yard distance is 125 miles from where we shoot.
Ah well, I rave on. It just seems to me sometimes we get caught up in collecting more hunting toys rather that enjoying the hunt and outdoors.
