I have an TC omega , and I put a VX -II 3-9 scope on it. WHen I took it in to have it bore sighted after I had mounted it - they said they could not get it close enough and would have to shim up the back half of it.

Are shims really needed or was I BSed into spending more? He said the shims would be plastic - Is this goint to cause my scope to shift at all over time? Sorry if these are silly questions - but I've mounted a few scopes before and never had to have them shimmed.

Here is a pic of my new baby -

Depends on how high over the bore you're mounting the scope - the higher the scope the more severe the angle between the bore centerline and the scope centerline. If you have "see-through" mounts to enable iron sights also, then most probably the standard scope will need shims to compensate for the angle difference.

I've used brass, aluminum (pop cans) and plastic for shims. All will work. Like the brass and aluminum the best.

One thing to watch for - if using a one -piece base, you can shim either end without problems. If a two piece system is used, the rings must be lapped to assure there is no offset between the ring centers that can stress and damage the scope tube, plus damage the erector tube works inside the scope.

its mounted with a warn base and medium rings. Its a 40mm and I don't think it could only be mounted about 3 or 5 mm closer to the barrel before its touching it.

I was really suprised it needed shims. I wonder if his bore sighter is way out of wack

Any thing is possible. Sounds like you've mounted it down where the bore and scope centerlines won't be much more than 1.25" apart. That shouldn't present a problem to a Leupold, although I've noticed my VariX-II's don't have the adjustment range of some other scopes. The Warne will be 2-piece bases. Be sure to have the rings lapped if shims do get used.

One thought - are these bases interchangeable, or does one specifically go to the front and the other to the rear on the Omega? Might have the bases on backwards if so.

It is a one piece base - see picture
