Hello,

A friend recently gave me a Winchester '94 30-30, saying that he felt it was broken. With the action open and looking into the chamber there is a small cut out at about 2:00 on the chamber. WE both know that the cut out is supposed to be there. His concern is that it appears to be broken in that area, as it is not a smooth cut or notch, but rough metal. The gun is about 10 years old, and he said he never noticed this before, and now doesn't want it and was going to get it destroyed. Of course I couldn't let that happen, and had to take it before he did that. My question is does that cut out on the -94 usually look that way, or is he right, and there is some problem with the gun. You can kind of see what I am talking about from my very bad picture

I cant believe I am advising anyone of taking pictures! I have been trying for a week to post one of mine!

Try backing off about 6 more inches from the rifle and change the light position to give us a better view. I worked with your picture some to sharpen it. The cut does tend to look torn. Is this an Angle Eject?

I haven't owned an Angle Eject Model 94 in several years, but I think you're looking at the extractor cut (where the nose of the extractor fits). Those are never/rarely smoothly finished. It would be extremely unlikely for anything to be "broken" in that area. You have the barrel enclosed by the receiver...all solid steel. I'd take it out and shoot it, see how it functions. I wouldn't worry about getting hurt... but that's just me.

I can't make heads or tails from the pic. But here is a pic I just took of the extractor cut out area in my 94AE .45 Colt. Not the same caliber, but the extractor cut out should be similar.

Hope it helps some.
