I have been wanting to put a red-dot scope on my Benelli Nova. I would most likely be having the receiver drilled and tapped for scope bases, have a weaver mount put on and go from there. The only thing is that I have heard that red-dots are not very durable on shotguns (the recoil must rock them apart). Is this true or are red-dots perfectly fine for slug guns? If so is there much of a difference in durability between a $40 red dot and a $90 red dot?
Never had one on a shotgun, but have one mounted on a 1911A1 that shoots nothing but GI hardball and have never had a problem with it (Tasco PDP5).

My hunting partner has one on a Mossburg 835 and it seems to be ok. I'm not sure which brand he has, but I think he paid about a hundred and thirtyfive for his.
I have an aimpoint 5000 on my Super Redhawk 44 mag and it was well over three hundred. I can't tell you how many rounds been thru that and nary a problem.
I don't think I would get a really enexpensive one, most of the time you do get what you pay for.
