When it comes to holsters what's the preference? In my case I guess I really have 3. For general carry I prefer the "pancake" design that most every manufacturer makes. I like the way it distributes the weight of the gun across a larger area and the way it holds the gun tight to the body while covering the entire gun. For riding an ATV or horse
, I prefer the cross draw. Puts the gun in a better position to draw. A should holster also works in this senario but they are not comfortable, at least to me. Finally for "deep" concealed carry I prefer the front pocket holster. This allows me have my hand discretely on my gun if I think it's necessary without anyone being the wiser. Obviously the carry weapon must me of appropriate size.

Dear txbirdman,
Your question is to "generic" to me.
I like the feel and sound of good leather with a handgun. I also like synthetic for its function.
A "good holster" to me is whatever keeps the weapon close to my hand. I prefer a Jeep and trailer for my Howatzer. Front pocket is fine for my derringer.
I work the middle ground on this one.

Gents,
Great idea, looking forward to the boys weighing in.
The holster that I have used the most is the Galco Sillouette, and I own a bunch of these. I agree with TX, I like having a holster that holds the gun close to the body, and stays put during presentation. The upward shift is the only issue that I have with paddle holsters, and I'm just starting to work with those. Would like to try one of those inside the trousers holslters, but am wondering if they do that much better, opinions?
Here in the sandbox, I'm wearing an old Bianchi shoulder rig for hanging around in the office, and when I am outside a molded Safariland thigh rig, 6000, I think? Something like that. I like that Safariland, It is perfectly positioned, so that I can get a natural firing grip without any measure of "chicken wing"
Best to you all.

Interesting thread guys, I just got a new Taurus stainless 4 inch 41 mag tracker and though I have a belt holster for it, it's not what I want. Is nylon and plastic and sticks the butt out about an inch and a half off the belt.
I've been looking at a cross draw as it seems to make it much easier to carry while driving, but have never used one. Any Ideas? Oh I forgot to mention that I'm a little rotund and that also doesn't lead to a belt gun being over comfortable.
For hunting with the big Redhawk with a an aimpoint I'm pretty much stuck with one of the nylon bandalero holsters I got from Cabelas. Not by any means perfect, but carrying that mass any other way does not seem to work.
Friend of mine gave up and put a barrel band swivel on the front and a swivel in the butt and just slings it now. It works for him, but with three hundred bucks of aimpoint sitting on the gun I'm leary of banging it on something with a sling.

I prefer Milt Sparks for fine gun leather. Fantastic quality, besides I'm originally from Idaho and like to support the local folk.

faucettb,
Check into one of these Galcos for your Tarus
http://www.usgalco.com/HolsterG3.asp?ProductID=781&GunID=227
It is a nice piece of leather and the design allows strong side OR cross draw. I use one with a 6" Anaconda. I like being able to use it for string side while Hiking, and cross draw for Four Wheelin.
Good luck

Thanks for the heads up ntjaxn
Thats a nice looking holster and just about exactly what I want. They didn't list anything for the Tracker so I dropped them an Email to see if that one fit.
