I remember chaseing squirlles with two shorts in my teeth and one in my little Win. 67 boys rifle. I still hunt squirrles with that little rifle and I still only shoot shorts through it. The short is a nice little round that used to be .50 cents a box now they are much more and are a lot harder to find. I did a little looking around and this is what I found- Rem. hi-vel shorts, CCI cb shorts, CCI shorts, and CCI hollow Point shorts. i usually shoot the rem being that I can find them at wal-mart and the cb i shot alot when I lived in the city. Has any body tried any of these other shorts? Are there any other short fans?

I use both CCI HP shorts and CCI cb shorts. Both shoot very well, cb's are quiet, and softer lead. JP

They used to be under 35cents a box ! The long rifles were 35 cents a box ! I use the shorts when i find a rifle that shoots them into a good group ! I also shoot the CB caps and the Acorn shorter caps when i can find them ! JAGG

Went to the trouble of rebuilding a H&A 922 action with a barrel chambered for .22shorts (1:16 twist, a take off from an old Rem. 37 that got cut to 21" of lean barrel before rechambering to .22short). Tested teh devil out of it, then rechambered it to .22LR and retested it again (even found an old Lyman 438 scope to put on top of it).

The BEST in accuracy was some Bakail (marked USSR so it was old) "Match" .2short. It only got 900fps on avearge, which is between "real" .22shorts and CB caps, but it wopuld produce the best groups (43yard groups...just all the range we had to work with).

Tried CCI HV HP, CCI HV solids, WW HV solids, WW Stardard Vel., WW "Gallery" (in this case stinetered lead made for gallerly shooting), Eley Match, Rem. HV solids, Federal HV solids, and Federal HV HP. The Russian stuff grouped best, but as that has to be at least 14 years old, you're not likely to find any for sale.

All in all, the best to expect is about TWICE what the best .22LR's can offer....more common is 3X the gorup (or looking at it another way, will get the same group at 1/2 to 1/3 the distance).

BEST average was .87" at 43yards (Bakail)...same range, the .22LR will group about .45". The others wee hit-and-miss...lot numbers are important as there seems a LOT of variatons inside the same headsatmp.

But even at 1/2 the accuracy, considering theya re worth about 1/2 the effective range, it wall works out. Won't shoot a critter past 40-50 ayrds with a .22short, so ther is accuarcy enough to do whatever a .22 is good for.

Why would you want to use shorts if LR's are cheaper and more powerfull? Am i missing somthing??

Just for fun: how do you feel about single shot rifles?...after all, semi-autos cost about the same and fire a whole bunch faster.

Think the .22short thing has to do with "fun"...just such a tiny little round, outting one of those cardboard 50round boxes in your coat pocket, slipping a single shot rifle down from the wall, and going out to hunt a few tree squirrels without distrubing the rest of the woods (.22shorts froma long barrled rifle are quiet)...may be shooting three or four shots during the late afternoon. the .22short just seems to be a good choice for a nice little easy going rifle.

I agree, shooting those little ole shorts are some fun. Just bought a couple of boxes of CCI shorts this afternoon. Already shot too many! They are more expensive, but great fun! I shoot em outta my levergun.

Takes me back, see shorts used to be the cheapest thing to get so that is what I got. used to only take eight rounds in to the woods that way a box would last me all week (no hunting on sundays) six squirlls a day was the limit. Was a lot of fun then still is a lot of fun now and I still use the same single shot rifle that I got when I was a kid.

Why would you want to use shorts if LR's are cheaper and more powerfull? Am i missing somthing?? quite frankly, YES ,you are . get some , get a pistol or revolver, and hve a bunch of very quiet fun, even more quiet if you shoot them through a rifle
