I know this is actually a shotgun question, but i thought one of you guys would have the answer. How many ft lbs of recoil does a 1oz. 12ga slug put out. Thanks

About 30 ft. lb. in an 8.5 pound gun.

I just ran the calculation for the old Brenneke 3" magnum load with a 1 3/8 ounce slug at an advertised 1502fps. My 870 with slug barrel weighs almost exactly 7 pounds. I guesstimated about 40grains of powder, and the recoil calculator says 46 foot pounds of recoil at 21fps!!! And I was commenting on the 300RUM in another thread!

Heck, I shot those Brennekes at deer from the time I was a pre-teen 'til I moved out west; I knew they kicked, but I didn't realize how much. If I'd been smart enough (er, dumb enough?) to run the numbers back then, I might have been afraid of that thing! :D

Remember that the ammo is cheacked for volocities with a 30" barrel.so that 1600 fps on the box isn`t really going to be there in a 20 inch slug barrel.this will change the formula a little

Yeah, I know. I wish I had a chronograph back then!
(They still kicked pretty hard, though!) :p

Shotgun slugs can stomp you pretty good. My handloads generate 48-58Ft-Lbs in a 7.5# gun. The slugs are 615 and 775 grains moving at 1555 and 1400FPS in a 24" barrel. I am putting heavier barrels, and stock to help with recoil. The one gun has a Mercury recoil reducer in the stock. It keeps the recoil headaches away. You don't want to sight it in all at once, it's a little too much. Greg S

Well I grew up shooting slug guns, and the recoil doesnt bother me anymore. I was just curious how the recoil from the slug gun compared to the recoil of some of the bigger magnum rifles. Thought it might give some people a comparison to look at.

Modifying this thread just a hair...I recently purchased a Remington/Baikal Spartan 12ga coach gun (20"bbls). This side by side has interchangeable chokes. My question is, when shooting slugs, what choke(s) if any, are best. Can you shoot slugs with a full choke?

You can shoot the standard style slug in a full choke. They are hollow and will swedge down to fit the choke. I dont know about the sabot slugs. They are designed for rifled barrels. With the double barrel, you will have to test and see which barrel is more accurate with slugs. I recently bought a Saiga 12 shotgun. Took it to the range to shoot some slugs (the only shotgun ammo allowed). I was very surprised to find that the recoil was about 2/3 of my 870. Shot up about 100 slugs that day with no shoulder problems. Can only take about 20 with the pump. Also the pistol like sights were zeroed right on at 50 yards from the factory. Accuracy was in the 1 and 1/2 inch range and all the slugs of different brands shot to the same point of aim. Im very pleased with this gun. BTW, it doesnt come with a recoil pad. Im going to get a pad put on to make it a pleasure to shoot. You should try this gun, its a blast to shoot.

Thanks Ironhead, that's the info I was seeking. I bought one of the gel pads for my Spartan and it made a world of difference. My shoulder was sore after four rounds of 00 buck the first time I fired it. Then, after adding the pad, I put ten rounds through it with no discomfort. It's called a "Limbsaver" and I bought it at a local shop for around $28.
