I just saw this .44 mag and I fell in love with it. I have not had a chance to shoot it yet. I am looking at the latest version (attached photo). Has anyone had any experience with this gun? Would you recommend any other .44 mags that are similar in general specs? I am also considering the Ruger, but this S&W is my current favorite. Any advice you can give is appreciated.

Hi there, I have a mod. 29 in a 4" barrell and wouldnt sell it for the world. Judging from the attached image you have a 4 screw SW 29 and those are tough to find. I also have a 44 mag in Ruger super blackhawk, another fine gun. A gunsmith did a trigger job on it, and I put a 2X scope on it and I now have a fine hunting pistol. If your funds allow, get both, if not, my nod goes to the model 29.....especially if it is a '4 screw' model.
Hope all this rambeling helps!!

I have a five screw 6.5 inch bbl 29 that now resides in the safe. shot a couple of sets of guts and a couple of barrels out of it. They are a great gun with excellent triggers that can be tuned even better.
I have finally went to Ruger Redhawks and Super Redhawks simply because thay are so solid. They take a more trigger work to get near as fine a trigger as a Smith, but with long cylinders and frames with no side plate thay are tougher than nails. Throw that in with one of the toughest stainless steels on the market and a reasonable price they to are a great gun.
I shoot a Super Redhawk 7.5 inch and my son likes one he can carry on his hip, he shoots a 5.5 inch Redhawk with open sights. Darn all those young folks with great eyesight, I sure miss it.

If I were going to take the gun in the deep woods, I would definitely go with a Ruger. Ruger revolvers are overbuilt tanks.
If I wanted a gun to occasionally strap on and show off I'd go Smith.
I've owned both and traded the Ruger Redhawk for a pretty Smith 629. I shore miss old ugly!

I too have a .44 mag;
it's the 629 variety!
It's a 4 inch heavy barrelled version, with an unfluted cylinder and is marked from the factory as being "One of three" revolvers ever built like this. I'v also got the factory letter to show it.
I purchased it used as a hunting sidearm. It's recoil is very managable with both factory and my relaods, and accuracy is excellent.

WOW, that Ruger is very sweet, I have been on the fence wirh Ruger and S&W, I have have always leaned to Ruger, but you may have firmly converted me. I also have a Ruger GP100 S/S .357 Mag and Colt Trooper III .357 Mag, the Ruger is just amazing. I like the way you have your Ruger setup in this photo. What sight do you have on there and would you recommened it?
