I'm currently reading Horned Death Buy John F. Burger. The events took place in Africa around 1930 to the late 40s. He makes reference to using a shotgun (no gauge referenced possibly a 12gauge?) with SSG or AAA loads. I'm assuming his shotgun and loads are european. Has anyone heard of these loads. Is there a moderen US equivilant.

According to Lyman's Shotshell Reloading Handbook, 4th Edition, SSG is 00 Buckshot.

There is no mention of AAA loads, but AAAA is #3 Buck and AA is equivalent to our T.

I once had a chart of European shot sizes (including buckshot) form about 1920...and it was a very large chart as no one seemed the slightest bit interrested in standardization.

Ours (the standard US shot size) is as arbitrary as any of the others, but pretty easy to understand from the smaller shot sizes (subtract the shot size from .17"),,,but the "buckshot" sizes just don't seem to follow a real logical pattern.
