I've been shooting with the Weaver rings for years and have always put up with the way the way they cant the scope as the steel band tightens. It takes lots of re-doing and guessing what will work out to a level scope. May be I've never paid much attention to it until I started using a level tool to check the crosshairs.

Anyone have any techniques or tricks for keeping the scope level while tightening the rings? Been thinking about switching to the Weaver Quad Locks or may be Bushnells...

I'm with you on the old style weaver rings. I mostly use Leapold, but if your looking for less expensive rings and bases Leapold now makes their own Weaver style and they sell them at Walmart.

I just put a set of the quad Weaver rings on a friends new Savage 7 mag and they don't tilt the scope when mounting them, not to bad looking.

I also like the Millett Angle lock rings and they have the advantage of being windage adjustable and though a little more pricey than Weaver they are nice rings. I have a set on My Ruger Super Redhawk. They make sets to fit Weaver bases also.

From my experience, and that of others, don't believe you can do much more to adjust for the cant of the scope reticle with Weaver rings other than by counter canting prior to tightening, RD.

As with faucttb, I've switched over to Leupold, Burris and Millet rings when using a Weaver style base. The Millet's can be adjusted for windage, but you need to be careful and adjust both rings for the windage. This certainly has helped with some mis-drilled mounting holes on receivers - even those from the factory!
