A friend has a Winchester rifle in 38/55 ser#4742. Thr gun is a takedown with a shotgun butt, however the Madis book sais there were no takedowns in the 1st year of production. The serial# indicates 1st year. Any idea on what this is? :confused:

The first Model 1894 takedown to leave the factory was serial no. 136, it was also the first assembled, completed Nov. 1, 1894 and shipped on Nov. 3, 1894. Early Winchesters were not necessarily built consecutively by serial numbers.
